My Upcoming Summer Trip
#1

We're heading to S Lake Tahoe this summer from N. AZ and want to add a side trip up PCH. Haven't done that since mid-70's in our 356. Probably come across I-40 to the Malibu area and then head north. Want to avoid as much interstate as possible, driving time isn't as important as driving fun. Will end up around Mendocino before heading over to Tahoe. I suspect things have changed since the 356 trip. Any suggestions on best side roads to take? Any thoughts on drives around Tahoe area?

Thanks.

what time in summer are you going? Porsche Parade will be in Monterey this year June 15-21, http://parade2014.pca.org/

EuroSunday is a great group around here that has drives and get togethers regularly, they have a database of great drives in Tahoe and really all over the state...here is the link: http://www.raddrives.com/routes-norcal.php I like loop 2 personally. You can take the lower part of the loop into Tahoe if you want to avoid Hwy. 50 although 50 is really not that busy and is a great drive itself.

We'll be in Tahoe last week of July so will miss Parade. But will be back for Monterey Historics in mid-Aug. I looked at the EuroSunday web site.you linked and there are some really great routes there. That will help piece together my route! Thanks bio! Lots of fun planning to do!

The drive up to Virginia City from 395 is a blast, then you can drop down into Carson City and pick up 50 and head over the pass to SLT. Easy fuel stop 1/2 mi south of the 395/50 intersection at Costco. Fuel in SLT is rather dear.

Thanks, will add this to my route! I have to go into Reno to pick someone up at the airport and this is now the route!

Either way over the hill is fun. I like the 50 a bit more than Mt. Rose Hwy, but only a bit. The west side of Tahoe is fun as well, traffic allowing.

If you like to hike and you have the time, the Tahoe rim trail is amazing, and you can get to it from the Mt. Rose Meadows, which is right along your route to SLT. The altitude is challenging (you are near 10,000' in some parts) but the view is remarkable. Rifle Ridge is very challenging, but it is one of our favorites.

I guess I now have a new picture to paste on my office window! That's a pretty nice view, better than the little creek that runs through my back yard.. I'll look for that trail, hiking is on the agenda. I'll also be bringing my fly rod, if there's any water in the creeks..... With the amazing amount of room in the back of the 968, plenty of room to hold fly rods and golf clubs.

Sure, that would be fun. But, I'm afraid you'll find my highly unmodified 968 pretty boring :-)

N LA area would be the 21st or 22nd of July, haven't figured it all out yet.

It'll take you just about as long to get to N. LA area from there as for us from here :-)

But, let's make a plan as we get closer to the trip. I'd love to meet you and hopefully some of the other LA-area people. Maybe we can work in one of the great loop drives!

That was looking down at the lake from Rifle Ridge. It was a little hazy that day, but still a great hike.

As for fishing, you need to try the Truckee and the Little Truckee at the north end of Tahoe. Most don't realize that the Truckee exits Tahoe at the north end, runs through the town of Truckee (if you go there, eat at Pianetta) then runs through the center of Reno on the way to Pyramid Lake. The Little Truckee runs from Boca/Stampede reservoirs and connects with the Truckee just outside the town of Truckee. That would be a fun drive in a fun car, followed by fishing and dinner at Pianetta in Truckee. Days don't get a lot better than that!

Let me know if you want more suggestions. After 23 years, we know the town pretty well.

I hit the Little Truckee about 5 years ago and had a blast! Great flyfishing water! It's on my plan to visit it again this summer. But there are a couple of small rivers/streams south of Lake Tahoe that are closer and look worth a visit, Carson and Walker rivers, if there's any water...... I'll put Pianetta on my Truckee Day.
