Road Trip!! San Diego to Portland
#1

I'm leaving today on a road trip up the west coast. 2,500 miles round trip!! I hope my coupe is up for it!

I figured I would start a new topic and try to updated it along the way with some pictures...I haven't tried uploading pictures from my Ipad to the site, but I'll do a test run today.

So I'm taking the inland route up, stopping in Mammoth area at some hot springs I've camped at before. Then I'll head the rest of the way up to Tahoe where I'll be staying at a friend's house, though he wont be there. I design kayaks and sailboats for Hobie Cat, and he is one of our main sales reps. He said I can use all the toys, including his Subaru wagon and kayaks and mountain bike, so I'm going to mountain bike the flume trails around the lake the first day, and then go kayaking at Emerald Bay on the lake. After that I'll be off to Oregon, stopping by Bend on the way for some climbing, and then heading to a friend's wedding on the weekend. After the wedding I'm going to Hood River to windsurf for 3 days before I drive to the Oregon coast and drive the coast the entire way home <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/smile.png" class="smilie" alt="" />

I had been considering towing a light trailer with toys on it, but I snapped out of it and realized how much better the trip would be without a trailer...especially considering the roads I'm going to be driving.

I checked the balance and timing belts this weekend, sealed a leak in the rear of the right balance shaft, changed the oil, and fixed a few odds and ends on the car. I have a handful of spare relays and a tool kit as well as plenty of spare fluids for the car. Of course something could break on the trip, but I've done a lot of preventative maintenance on the car...so I'm taking my chances. I'm really excited to be able to have such an adventure with it.

Any Advice before I head out?

Cheers

Phil

395 is a real nice drive once you get out of the desert. Stop in Bishop and stock up on Schatt's bakery bread and then at Bodie ghost town (above Mono Lake) before you head up the hill to Tahoe.

If you are a fly fisherman, the streams on the east side of Sierra as you head up 395 are worth checking out.

My best advice is just to enjoy the trip. You're going to a lot of fun places. If you've never been on the Oregon coast, there are a lot of very scenic areas, and some fun/quaint small towns to enjoy along the way. Here's some recent shots from around the Netarts Bay & Oceanside area.

MB968, I live in Oceanside, CA, so I like the sound of Oceanside to Oceanside...It looks like a really beautiful coast line. I guess that would be a pretty easy starting place for going down the coast as I'd just go west from Portland.

Mike, I'll be in that area for the wedding, and back and forth from Hood River, so we should definitely meet up. I new that 94Silvercab was going to be in the area, I'll try to get in touch with him in the next couple days, maybe some of us can meet up!

Here's a map of what my plan is right now, including some of the places you guys mentioned.

If anyone, in particular, wants to hike Tom Dick and Harry on Sunday or Monday, PLEASE let me know...

Alright! I've survived so far, and so has the 968. I have stuck to the plan, Im in Tahoe right now about to go mountain bike, and then possible heading out this evening to get some of the driving out of the way on the way up to Portland.

Jay, I will give you a call, we should definitley meet up, if nothing else, at least for coffee.

So, I can't upload photos to the site with my Ipad, the icon is greyed out, so instead I started a Picasa album and attached the link below. I did end up going to Bodie, the ghost town. I took a back way up...10 miles of washboard gravel roads...felt like the wheels were going to fall off, even at 5mph. The way back down the other side starts as gravel for 3 miles, but then there is about 10 miles of about 2,500 elevation drop, 55mph speed limit and some amazing twisties, beautifully paved...I was so enthralled by it I went back up and did it again. I have a go pro with me as well as two other video cameras. I had it on for that road, but it was mounted to the roll bar, and it's a bit far back in the cockpit with the wider angle lens, so I'll try to find another spot to mount it. It was fine except with the black interior the camera has a hard time sorting out the contrast and the road looks very washed out.

Cheers

Phil

The only thing greater than the pics is the love that you have for your car.

I know just how you feel...like an oasis in the midst of the fray.

can't wait for the engine swap to be done. maybe Tuesday.

Thanks for the great pics. So is it the iPad that prevents uploading pics?

What's happening. Haven't heard anything in a couple of days, and you must be in our neighborhood by now. Hope that means you're having a great visit.

Are we still up for meeting at a coffee shop somewhere in Portland?

Hey guys,

Sorry I've been a bit off the radar...windsurfing will do that to me! What an amazing town Hood River is. I don't want to leave. The wind has been 20-35mph the entire time, I'm going out again this afternoon and then heading to Portland area. I'm meetin up with Jay, Joe and Mike (94SilverCab, MB968, Michael Fleming) for Coffee somewhere in the Portland area around 630 or 7pm tonight. If anyone else in the area is intersted, please post on this topic and PM me your number and I can call you and let you know where we decide to go.

Also I've added a few more pics to the Picasa album link above.

Cheers

Great pics Phil! I just did a 800 mile round trip-to Monterey (for car week) and back to OC - the car gave me no troubles. Saw only two other 968s up there - both at the Legends of the Autobahn show on Friday. Ferrari's and Lambo's were everywhere on the streets, but 968s are still a rare sight, even during car week.
