Road Trip
#1

Mike and I are headed out for a mountain/desert road trip and I am asking for suggestions of "must see or must drive" activities along the way. Areas that we will be traversing include the following.

Southern Lake Powell

I-70 between Green River UT and Denver

I-25 between Denver and Albuquerque

Tucson

Phoenix

We'll be taking photos along the way and posting a mini travel blog as we go (assuming internet connectivity here and there).

Thanks in advance for your ideas.

lol - i would take the northern route up through paso robles

seriously - route 40 has all the "sights" of route 66 - if you've never seen them in person, then there they are - pretty dull drive though until you get to the rockies, no matter which way you go - i've made that one too many times

note of caution - beware of sand and gravel - my paint job got HAMMERED

That's a nice length of trip your planning there. Try going east or west in the UK for any part of that distance and you'd fall off into the sea! Lake Powell looks great. Hope it goes well, remember your spare DME relay! Plus water and a spare can of fuel, and I don't mean a cold sixpack either! Have a great time.

After you leave New Mexico going West on I-40 (old Route 66) there is a very interesting (challenging?) little road in Arizona (hwy 191 South) turn left at Sander, AR and follow route 191 down past Clifton then you can take highway 19 to tie up with I-10 on your way to Tucson. After driving Tail of the Dragon in the Southeast I didn't expect to find anything like it out here in the Southwest but 191 is even better since it is much longer and has less tourist traffic (RVs, motorcycles, etc.) Enjoy! Bob Blackwell. If you give me a call when coming through Albuquerque I will meet up for dinner & beer (margaritas?). (505) 506-6807

Sedona, and oak creek are a must if youve never seen them. If your in the neighborhood, youd be more than welcome to come by and check out a 3.0 turbo.

191 is on the itinerary Bob. Looks very interesting. Sedona might work too - I stopped at Montezuma's Castle last time we were out that way - weird place. Keep 'em coming boys.

Another vote for Sedona, especially if you've never been there. When it comes to impressive, it's in the ballpark with Yosemite but, instead of the gov't finding it and turning it into a national park, some people found it and turned it into a neighborhood! If you have the time, get the daily pass that allows you to drive out into the formations on the dirt roads. Also, if you are in Sedona, you're not that far from the Grand Canyon.

Along all these routes the places we've been and enjoyed:

- +3 on Sedona and Oak Creek Canyon.

- Prescott Az.

- Santa Fe, NM

- Zion National Park

- The 4 corners (you can be on 4 states at a time)

- Lake Havasu (London Bridge)

- Leadville, CO

- Durango, CO and the road to Silverton and Telluride

- Mesa Verde NP

- Rocky Mtn National Park (Estes Park)

- The Mustang Ranch in NV (oops, maybe this one was just the guys) <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/ohmy.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

- And yes, the Grand Canyon is here also, don't miss it if you've never been there.

I can go into great detail on UT and CO sights and roads, after leading PCA tours out here for years. PM me if interested in details.
