Road Trip 2011
#1

Getting ready for the trip.

Hoses changed

Air Filter cleaned and recharged

Wind Deflector in

Boot Cover fixed and Ragg Topped

Here is the current state of the car. I call her Redneck Racecar 2.0

The course is laid in and the hotels set. Hopefully the weather will cooperate. As promised I'll be sending pics from the road. Stay tuned.

I've never seen this done, nor have I ever seen a car on the road with plastic and tape on it...

Is it purely to prevent wear and tear from common road debris?

Yes. Does a great job protecting the paint. Last year's version 1.0 is in my gallery. I'm becoming quite the plastic wrap artist

Now, I can understand doing this when you drove the car home from IL but will you do this everytime you go out? How long is this road trip?

well, some of us actually choose to drive these cars like they were meant to be driven, hard and fast, and not just gingerly taken to local q-tip klatches, but we still like them to look nice too - so, i get the idea - i would have chosen something a bit more aesthetically pleasing, like a clear bra, but i do get the idea

at least he's taking it out for a long trip of fast driving - i look forward to more of those myself

a "q-tip klatch" is a gathering of those fussy pinheads who plot the absolute shortest route to the concours event, so as not to accumulate any miles, carefully driving their garage queens at a snail's pace, dodging every bug and speck of road grime along the way, to then spend hours fussing over the car making sure nobody touches it before the judge gets to it, yet all the while ignoring the fact that the car needs to be driven the way it was intended, just to keep it running properly, and completely missing the point of having one of these cars

the thing i don't get is where the big deal is about cleaning a car, as if that has any bearing on anything - i like my cars extremely clean, but i pay a guy to clean mine - what a complete waste of my time - what makes that special in any way to begin with? if they want to judge something, judge how well the car is maintained mechanically - any idiot can maintain paint and interior, and keep miles off of a car to help ensure that - those people get no respect from me, and frankly i think they are clueless - show me somebody who has 100k on the car, and they drive the piss out of it, and still it looks and runs like it was new, and then you have something to talk about

sure, i've done my share of concours events, but with porsches, at least with PCA, it is like no other group - i think they have completely forgotten what these cars are for

but back on topic

i am really happy to see rxter making this voyage - it's exactly the kind of thing this car is perfect for - i've enjoyed every one of the drives i've taken in mine, and i'm sure this one will be a blast

I'll have to consult you prior to my long drive to the PCA Parade in Savanah in July.

Clearing the entire front of the car would have cost $2500 and clouds up after 18 months (even when a car is stored out of the sun most of the time). That's most of the way there to the SC kit. The RoadWrap cost me $35 and gets out of my way when I'm finished. Anywho -

Started out yesterday. Took off with the top down. All sunshine and warm temps.

Up the Mountain on I-8 East.

Yikes - it's snowing up there. Remarkably we kept the top down for about an hour and stayed warm and dry. I started to pine or Bob's tonneau cover as the temps dropped to the upper 30s. Then it turned to rain coming down the mountain so we skipped into the only exit for about 40 miles and got the top up

The Yuma public transportation system.

On the back side of the storm the sunset was spectacular.

Spending today with my son in University here. Tomorrow we head for Bob Blackwell's favorite road. I got a tip from a member to get a Go-Pro camera. Anyone know if that's available at a Bestbuy or Fry's? No time for ordering and shipping on line.

Is that road wrap like clear self adhesive book covering (we call it Contact)?

I keep forgetting how cheap fuel is over there!

Sort of - more like tacky than adhesive. Easy to remove and the small bit of residue washes off easily.

After 2 solid days of snow and rain the sun came out, so the top goes down in Clifton AZ.

The Morenci Mine is the largest copper mine in the US. I remember seeing this from 35,000 feet in a plane. That was impressive, but it looks a lot bigger from the ground.

And be careful with the maps. Our Garmin guide insisted that we turn left here - I guess he needs a map update...

Out of the mine North into some of the most striking and beautiful country in Arizona, the Apache National Forest. We drove for 2 hours on this road, and saw 4 cars going in the other direction. It is an amazing place for a drive. Thanks for the tip Bob Blackwell ! We saw 10 deer, a turkey, and a couple of Elk without ever getting out of the car - oh, and a bull - the only way that critter got to the spot was by walking up, or down, the road - after we saw him we slowed down and enjoyed the view.

Sunrise in Albuquerque and on to the next day...

Beautiful Morning in Albuquerque. Mike just got his learner's permit so we did a bit of driver's Ed in a mall parking lot. Seems that the 968 clutch is a bit touchy for a 16-year old

Gassed up (pun intended) and the top down.

Took 285 up through Fort Garland to Colorado Springs. Other than a pretty ride from Fort Garland to I-25 on 160 this was boring. 285 North is pretty dull - straight as a string with road conditions that vary from new to bad. The most interesting thing we saw on the way.

Interesting photo op.

We have a short ride up to Grand Junction today, so we'll take a look at the Academy here in town first, then enjoy the beauty that is the Rockies. Looks like the weather will hold out for us. Mid-40s with some rain maybe. Tomorrow looks a bit dicey as the elevation makes any estimate of road conditions a real guess. Not news to those of you who live around here, but a bit tenuous for a 3000 pound sports car with summer tires .

Started out here today.

The weather was perfect today and we made it to the spot where we had to turn around last year. Victory! Mike jammed a screwdriver into a tree to mark the spot. I hope he comes back some day, maybe with someone close to share the memory - plus I want my screwdriver back - it was my favorite.

Then some stunning views through Glenwood Canyon. Met the nicest guy in a rest stop there. If you've not been to this place its worth the drive. The rest stops are parks. Anyway, turns out that this guy and his wife work for the Co DOT. So he have us some great ideas as to where to go. 131 along the Crystal River was beautiful.

Today we head to Gateway (also recommended by my new Glennwood friend and coloradocab here, to the Arches, and on to Lake Powell.
