My trim piece where all the controls and buttons for the lights resides have cracked. I have bought a new one, but now I am unclear about the procedure for replacing this trim piece. I have done a search here and I could not find anything helpful.

Unfortunately, Clark's garage (http://www.clarks-garage.com/shop-manual/body-24.htm) and Scotts' DIY (http://www.968forums.com/index.php?showtopic=4) is not very clear on this section either (No pictures).

I need to know if I have to remove the steering wheel, and wiper/indicator switch assembly to get to the screw that sits next to the steering column. I don't mind doing this, I have done it so many times, I can do it in my sleep. But if i don't have to it would be so much quicker.

Any advice is appreciated.

lol - it's out as we speak

pretty easy really

to get it out, open the door and pop the little round cover off of the triangular side plate - remove that screw and then the plate

this reveals the 2 screws underneath - remove those

there is a screw at the center of the bottom of the steering column - remove that

there is a screw that is at the bottom of the face plate and goes into the dash - remove that

remove the headlight knob (just pull)

remove the nut

place the vent control in the center and then gently push it through the slot

i think that's about it, other than unhooking the dimmer connector

I am guessing this screw is only accesable by going through the rubber bellow that surrounds the indicator stalk?

Can you maybe post a pic of this area?

I always dread triggering the airbag light when I remove the wheel. It hasn't happened yet, but there is always a first time.

I have also come to realize that, like with modding your car, if you replace one warn out/broken piece of trim, you have to replace them all. The soft satin black of the new parts makes the old parts look cheap and ugly.

Luckily the trim pieces are ridiculously cheap, for Porsche parts that is. They are roughtly 25 euro a piece. I guess I will never understand Porsche logic. The one thing that is a genuine Porsche part and unique to the 944/968 is cheap, but a generic Bosch fuel pump rebranded as Porsche will set you back 200+ euro while the Bosch unit is barely 100.

Go figure...

I have just completed this job and I can now confirm it is impossible to replace the trim pieces around the steering wheel without removing the steering wheel. The problem is that there are one screw per trim panel that sits right next to the steering column and this can not be accessed without removing the steering wheel and the trim cover over the steering shaft.
