Cost of Engine Swap?
#1

I was thinking about swapping motors in my two cars. I'm going to keep the Blue 6-speed, but it has 135K on it, and the Silver Tip only has 88K on it. Anybody want to take a flyer and guess what the cost might be? I'm in the Atlanta area if that helps.

So we are talking about a double swap to get the lower mileage motor in the 6 speed car? How about just pulling one motor and rebuilding it? The costs could be very similar and you get a fresh motor. It would be a shame to remove a motor and not take that opportunity to refresh something on it while it is out.

I would estimate 30 hours of labor -- each way. If you can find a shop that charges $80/hour, then 30hours x $80/hour x 2 = $4800. And then there's all the "while you're in there" items....

It's not worth it, IMHO...

the book say 14.9 hrs for removal and reinstallation of each engine - at 80/hr that's 1200 bucks each assuming no complications

i'd do a leakdown to check rings, and then just do a valve job if they check out ok - you'll be good for a long time that way, with a lot less down time, and about the same cost, but you get the added benefit of a better car to sell

You have the book? 14.9 hours seem more reasonable -- DIY people have removed an engine over a long day.

The 30 hour number is based on a quote I got when they wanted to pull the motor to straighten my frame. I also got the 30 hour number when I was working on dropping that 968 motor in a 944.

You can yank an engine out over a long day, but reinstalling with all the fixits (and there are going to be plenty) takes a ton of time. I would estimate a good R&R to take almost 40hrs

fixits - yeah - those are those "complications" i was mentioning - as anal as i am, there would be a ton for sure, but then, i would not be sticking in a used motor either - that just sounds like a waste of time and money

seems simple on the surface, but not once you look into it a bit
