Removing dashboard trim piece
#1

I need to remove the 10" x 2" trim piece from the dashboard (just below the centre vents). The blower and heater knobs, and both buttons for the slider controls have popped off OK, but where do I go from here?

Does it just lever out, or is it screwed in from behind? I don't want to break it to find out.

IIRC you have to remove the trim on either side first.

Hmm.. That's getting a bit involved.

OK, change of tack...

I've just bought one of those PDA sat-nav thingies, and I'm looking for a neat way of mounting it. I've bought the proper mount, and it has a 1" by 1" square fitting which screws on to a solid surface.

The plan was to screw it in to this trim piece, just next to the heater control (but on a spare piece from a dismantlers, so I could put the original one back afterwards).

But I don't want to dismantle the whole dash to do this.

Anyone got any ingenious mounting solutions for these things?

Yes it just levers out but it is a delicate piece of plastic that covers the ac control unit. I used a small screwdriver to carefully lever it from all sides. You only have to remove the two silder buttons, because the opening for the blower and heater knob are wide enough. If you weant to remove the ac control unit you will see the screws under this cover

the center trim piece won't be sturdy enough to mount the navigation unit. I would personally have to be installing it to come up with a clever location. It's hard to visualize like this.

Yeah, take it to a AutoAccessory (audio) store. I just had a new XM satellite Alpine put in the Cab and they had the entire dash ripped out, antenna installed and back together in 45 minutes for ~$100. I had a nice cup of coffee and read a magazine while they did it. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/wink.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />
