Removing door speakers
#1

Just picked up a nice '94 coupe with the hi-fi sound (option 490). I have a buzz in one of the upper door speakers, and was wondering if anyone knew how to get to the speaker itself. Does the grill come off, or do I need to pull the entire door panel off?

You can see the speaker I'm talking about in this pic:

TIA

You have to pull off the door panel to access the speaker. It's not to hard of a job to pull off the panels, but watch out for hidden/covered screws

Regard and good luck

You can get at the tweeter by removing the window switch plastic cover. I've seen cars with the speaker in the door as your picture/link shows but most of the time, they are located in the area under the armrest, depending on which option code the car came with. While it is much easier to do things with the door panel off, it can be tedious and you must be careful not to break the clips or the fiber board material...they make upholstry tools for pulling door panels. I've done it both ways. Hope that helps.

Darryl is correct about getting to the tweeter at the top of the door panel. You can gain access to the rear of the tweeter by unscrewing the window switch plate under the tweeter. The speaker that's built into the armrest/map pocket can be easily accessed by removing the seven or eight screws that attach the map pocket to the door panel. The speaker at the front of the door panel in that picture looks like it can only be accessed by removing the door panel.

There was an article with step-by-step instructions (and pictures) on removing the door panel in a 968 in the April 2005 Excellence magazine. The article is on replacing the window seals but the door panel had to come off to replace the window seals. Incidentally, if you take the door panels off (which is not hard and it takes just the usual hand tools), you are most of the way to replacing window seals. If your window seals are cracked and ugly, consider replacing them.
