Relay advice
#1

I will be taking an extended driving trip with the 968 this summer, and I was wondering what relays you all would suggest I keep with me. I have an early 92 if that makes a difference.

Thanks!

Take along a spare DME Relay or you can make a jumper cable as per Clark'-garage.com. in the link below, go down to "Emergency Repair".

DME RElay is the big one. I keep the extra fuses (on the lid) filled up, just in case...

Do you guys remember when a DME relay at the Porsche dealer used to cost about $ 20 ? ( I bought a couple of extra ones back then to keep the spares in my cars ) I haven't checked lately with the local P-dealer, but while while web surfing for the voltage regulator, I noticed Paragon sells the relay for $ 80 , which means it's probably $ 120 or more at dealers. The genuine Porsche one, because there are a couple of aftermarket relays selling for $ 30 - $ 50 ..

I am curious to hear about anyone’s experience with this too. If I understand the function of this new relay it is supposed to power the fuel pump immediately upon the ignition key being turned instead of waiting for the engine to actually rotate before powering the fuel pump. The upside is supposed to be quicker starting because the fuel system is pressurized even before the engine is cranked. I know that several of my other late model vehicles have this feature.

One negative regarding the activation of the fuel pump when there is no engine rotation might be that the fuel keeps being pumped in the event of an accident where fuel lines have been broken, unless there is some system that would detect engine stoppage and shut down the fuel pump in such an event.

Really??,,, is the DME relay that unreliable that we have to carry a spare with us..... I have all the back-up fuses in the cover. Thought that would cover it.

Since I replaced my original 944 part with the 993 part I have only replaced the relay once more in 18 years. Still, it seems like good insurance.

I think I've replaced two DME relays in the last 15 years , but enough members on this forum experienced issues with that thing it almost compels you to keep a spare in the car. Still " cheap insurance " as Jay pointed out , but even cheaper for me since I bought the spares ( from the Porsche dealer ) when they were just $ 20 or $ 25,..

I have used the solid state relay from F9, works great.  Nice to hear pump run momentarily before start.  Once you turn key you can no longer hear.  I bought the F9 solid state relay with fuel pump prime and then kept the old one as spare.  No affiliation but here is the link:

Like Jsheiry, I have been using the F9 solid state relay with the pump prime feature for 2 years. It works great.  For a recent road trip, though I went through my mind about all the relays in our cars that have gone out at inopportune times and bought the 968 equivalent ones.   My list  was:

Fan relay- killed a battery on our Volvo.

Hazard/Turn signal relay- died in about 4 years on our Audi. Have you ever tried to use hand signals for turns in the dark?  They are not very effective.

And since it was summer, I figured the windows and AC relays would be cheap insurance.

I also keep the fuse panel stocked.

None of it takes up much room and I figure it is cheap insurance vs. having to be stranded somewhere in the hot sun.

YMMV
