Recent Racing Videos
#1

Here are a couple of in-car videos from recent races.

The first one is the start from last Sundays Regional Group at the SCCA Double Nationals at Pacific Raceways. The grid was a hodgepodge made up of mostly Porsches and Spec Miatas. I passed the silver 911 on the second lap and he was stuck to my bumper for the rest of the race. I ended up running my fastest laps to date during the race, 1:36.6. I was pretty happy with that time as it was 2 secs faster than the best I did last year on new Hoosiers (I was on old Toyo RA1s this year).

Group 6 Start

This one is just a clear race lap of Pacific Raceways from the week before. Not my best time or anything. I did remember my wide angle lense though.

Great videos!! Thanks for posting them. Very nice moves on the 911 and the Camaro!! I definitely know what its like to have a 911 on your tail for an entire race. One of these days I'll figure out how to post some of my videos.

Jim - I'd love to see some of your videos.

I've had a couple of good races lately that haven't made for good video. The tape looks pretty boring if you don't realize there is another car directly behind the camera. I'm going to have to rig up a mirror or something just for the camera. I've seen that done before.

Eric: Great video. Like Jim, I'd like to post some of my video as well. I use a Sony Analog camera. Do you have to use a digital camera to post video. I have transfered my mini analog tapes to VHS. What type of equipment are you using to do this. I bet it's simple I just don't know how to do it?

It is simple if you have the hardware. You need some sort of digital video cam. If your computer doesn't a firewire or i.Link (as Sony calls it) port then you will also need a card for the computer. You also need some sort of video capture/editing software on the computer.

I just plug my Sony handycam into the computer. I use Pinnacle Studio 9 (I'm sure there are a lot of other programs out there) to capture the video, edit it, and then compress it into something useable on the internet.

If you have a digital video camera you can also use it as a passthru to take video from VHS to the computer.

Charles, there are devices available that have RCA inputs (and S-Vid) and a USB output. You simply install their software, hook up the device, plug your analog camcorder ouput ports (RCA/S-Vid) to the inputs of the device, play and rip, and voala, digital copy created to your drive. Check Best Buy, Circuit City, Fry's et al.

I was just down at PRI this past Saturday slumming at the PCA Driver's Education event. They weren't allowing people in the in-field so we were restricted to viewing only turns 8, 9 and barely 1. It was nice to come home and check out this video, and see what they guys were talking about how the backside is the best part of the track.

I did get to see a 968 Turbo S, which I found out was a clone, but still a stunning car with 3-Piece Speedline Turbo 5-spokes. The highlights for me was seeing Jodi Fordahl's RSA rip around the track and also seeing a black GT-2 doing laps...I guess he was ripping into turn 1 at a buck-sixty!

Seric - You should have come down to the races the weekend before. There were several nice Porsche to see plus all kinds of other stuff. The backside of Pacific is where all the action is, unfortunately the walk up spectator rarely goes over there.

I happened to see that Blue TurboS look 968 on I-405 last weekend. It does look very nice.

Here is a video of a couple of wet race laps from 3 weeks ago. I was trying unsuccessfully to catch the GT2 280Z which was running second. One end of the track was raining and the other end was drying. I think these are the toughest conditions when the track changes each lap. Full wet or full dry is easier to deal with.

Thanks for the great Videos Eric - that is a great still shot too - post a high res so we can DL it.

Pacific Raceways is a terrific track - and to give viewers an idea of the cornering speeds, your key fob makes for a great g-meter!
