What part am I looking for? Exterior door handle broken
#21

Ok, so after having a computer crash, I'm finally back with an update. I got the handle off and it was not the worst job I've ever done, but certainly had its moments. I guess I got lucky or had the right tool because I got the plastic part to pop off the ball joint the 2nd try. I'll post pics of my tool when I get my laptop back up.

Nobody mentioned the white wire you have to deal with! I was hoping there was an easy way to disconnect it at the handle but I couldn't figure it out so I ended up having to disconnect it along the bottom of the door and feed it through. This was made about 100x harder since there is (was) dynamat covering the entire door panel I eventually got though.

Anyways, it is the actual lever that broke so I'll have to order a new one of those. I'm sure it might be easier to try an source a new one but it won't be cheaper and the paint on the handle is actually quite good so I'll just work through fixing it. Sam, I'm sure I'll be bugging you since it sounds like the same fix you just did, thanks for the extra part numbers I'll need. Where did you get the "tiny snap washer"? Paragon also?

No problem with help just PM me (and the bad news is you can unscrew the wire at the handle) - I got the snap washer a Hollywood hardware (old fashion hardware store where you can pick up single scews/washers etc) - just down the street from me and like I said it was only like 10 cents.

Doh! See, don't have the internet for two days and the fix takes twice as long.

I got the handle off the car, got the pin holding the lever out but I have hit a snag. How do I get the old broken lever out? I see the phillips head which gets a couple more parts off but after that I can't see a way to get the lever off? I tried doing a search and there is some talk about needing the key so I tried that but didn't get anywhere.

Any suggestions? I'll post a pic if no one is understanding where I'm stuck atSmile

Thanks guys!

Ok, I don't recall having to do anything after removing the rivet - mine just slid out (in peices of course it was broken) have you tried using the latch lever - its what rotates the lever to actuate the door latch - to release it? Tring to picture it sitting here at work.

Its funny you mentioned it, I just got everything out 2 minutes ago. There is another small pin holding the lock cylinder that came out pretty easily. It took me a while to notice it since there was crap caked on both sides. Now everything is out and I'm awaiting the replacement parts!

SUCCESS!

Holy cow that was a pain in the butt. Finally after several online orders, a trip to RC Hobbies to get a c clip, many many curse words and wrangling, I finally got the door handle back on and everything works as it should! Even the central locking and LED work now.

Thanks everyone for the help, it was as big a pain as everyone said but all the help and suggestions really made things easier than they could have been.

FYI, anyone doing this job, if you have to replace the reverse lever (you'll know) I have plenty of extra c clips in the correct size if you can't find a hardware or hobby store that has them, let me know. I'm also happy to talk to anyone and relay any of the hints I found along the way.

Now onto the coolant leak!
