My door cards need TLC
#1

I’ve been putting off fixing my discolored door card tops for too long. At one time, I actually got swatches from a company that advertised leather and vinyl repair and recoloring, but I’ll be damned if I can find them or their great YouTube videos.

I’ve gone through 5 pages of search, and most of the links are dead. I have narrowed it down to two options:

The easier one is to go to my local autobody place and buy a pint of SEM vinyl paint and some prep. It comes highly recommended.  Problem is, they have “light grey” and “dark grey.” They also have some marine vinyl paints listed by various manufacturers and “Formula Boats Grey” looks pretty close.

A company called Classic Dye Products has a pretty extensive color chart, but 968s aren’t listed, and they list no colors for 944.

Going by the 911 colors in the proper years, there’s 959 Raseberry (??) which is too light, 2556 Graphite Grey which is too dark, but 944 Graphite Grey seems about right. (Goldilocks Grey!!)

I know it’s delusional to go off a color chart posted online, so maybe what I’m asking is for FHE with Classic Grey vinyl dyes. Like I said, I searched a bunch of older threads but all the links are dead. I’m going to stop by and look at SEM paints tomorrow, but anyone have a better idea?

Try an upholstery shop. The one in the plaza where I had my antique store was always doing car seats, golf club seats and he easily matched the armrest center cubby in the Element and the silverado when I had it. It was a perfect match but find one that's been around a while...He may have a way to cover them or make new ones...

I’m just going to paint them. Watched enough YouTube videos to feel good about the results.

Might find a spare and give it a go on that before you work on your set - probably learn a lot doing it on a toss away first.

Good idea. I just stripped a grey Mercedes interior and have plenty to practice on.

I recommend Porsche Leather Dye Interior Color Chart (leatherworldtech.com)

This product worked well, you have to be careful about the amount of "sheen" vs. OEM. They have a product to adjust.

I already ordered from Classic Dye. Unless that proves wholly unsatisfactory on my test pieces, that’s what I’m going to use. One reason I chose it is that it’s specifically vinyl dye, not leather or vinyl dye.

Got the stuff today. Tried a bit on one of my scrap Mercedes door cards.

1. Raseberry

2. Classic Grey

3. 1:1 Raseberry/Classic Grey

4. 2:6 Rasberry/Classic Grey, which seems like the “Goldilocks” color. At least on this vinyl.  I’ll have to check it with my Porsche door card.

Here it is on a handle, which seemed to match the upper door card vinyl more closely. The light is different but 1 is the CG, 3 is Raseberry, and 2 is the 2:6 R/CG.

I may just find the CG exactly matches the darker top of the door card, I won’t know until I compare it to my car. Waiting on one more bit for my passenger door lock before wading in.

Due to the darkening of the top of the panel, I’m contemplating doing a coat of the Raseberry before I do the rest.

@94SilverCab I thought of you and laughed (at myself) when I opened the box and the two color bottles were labeled “Classic Leather Dye!”

I have a couple of seats out of that parts car and I’m going to see if the darker Classic Grey matches the Porsche color more closely on leather.

I’m pretty sure it would. But

You’d have to take it out to do it right and given that level of labor I’d just go ahead and either have it covered or replace it.

OTOH, there’s a thread on the RL of a guy who rehabbed a 944 which involved pulling the dash, fixing the cracks, then repainting it (IIRC) He used Great Stuff spray foam to fill the cracks, then sanded the whole dash before painting it.

eta: WooHoo. Found it:

This is pretty interesting as well. TBH, I can’t believe this turned out this well. Makes me think if my dye job doesn’t work out, I’ll just recover the card tops myself.

Well, go figure. The “Classic Grey” was a match.

Despite looking really dark compared to the others, it’s pretty darn close when compared to the Porsche bits. Top is natural light (in my garage) bottom is my iPhone flash.

Brought my airbrush and compressor home, along with another piece of MB trim to practice my skilz before I wade into it.
