I've looked though a couple old posts and have not found what I am looking for, which is "what am I looking for?" <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/biggrin.png" class="smilie" alt="" />

The exterior door handle broke and it just flops around now. My concern is whatever broke has fallen down the door so I'm not sure what I am looking for to figure out what I need to replace. Can anyone point me in the right direction or have pictures of what the mechanism looks like and what likely broke? Any threads you know of that would be helpful? I understand this will be a PITA job but having a broken door handle is an equal pain.

Yes, I have gone through the PET. Looking at page 173, I believe the part the commonly breaks is the pin shown as part #48, correct?

i actually broke the armature.

you're going to have to take it apart to see what it broken, then go to the diagram and figure out which part it is, and then order it.

pain in the butt for sure. i just went through it. the car sat without a door panel, or ability to open or close the door, for 4 days.

On my last car, it broke around the pin, so part #46 which is the "actuating lever".

Thanks. I can at least open mine from the inside. The outer door handle just flops around so I'm thinking its the pin but we will see. I don't have small hands and the <acronym title='previous owner'>PO</acronym> put dynamat on the doors so I'm sure this will be an extra pain in the butt.

The screw that secures the handle (part #6 on p173 of the Parts Catalogue) worked its way loose and fell out of mine thanks to someone in its past over-tightening it and damaging the thread on the handle, causing the handle to flop about. Might be worth a look.

Thanks Michael, unfortunately I have already removed that screw to try and look behind the handle so I know it was secured. I'm thinking its the handle itself now but I will find out more after work today.

So I got the door panel off and handle out a bit and I can see that it is the actual lever that broke. Half of it is flopping around, the other half is still attached. Now the big questions are how to replace it. I got that it is part number 944 537 671 00, however it says that is for the left side, right side is 944 537 672 00. It is my passenger door that broke so is that right or left?

Also, I saw that flash had this same problem in a thread a few months back and fixed his and did a DIY write up, but I cannot find that thread...any help locating it Bob? Is there any way to fix this from only the outside? The <acronym title='previous owner'>PO</acronym> put dynamat on the inside of the door and it will be a sticky mess to get it off!

the side of the car is as viewed from the driver position, so for US cars the left side is the driver side.

i did not do the write up, as somebody else beat me to it. i can't remember who though, or what the thread title was.

Ok having replaced this part recently on my driver side door (PITA) I needed to also buy a door roll pin #41 (944.537.637.00) - got from Paragon I beleive - because you have to knock out the current pin and it wasn't reusable after that I also had to get a tiny snap washer (it was like $.10) to lock it on...Mostly it was a PITA trying to get the ball jiont back on - though I didn't take off the door planal which may have made that easier

Getting the plastic piece on the joint is not fun. However, I've found the 2ft pry bar with a little curve on the end to be better than a straight screw driver. I don't find it any easier to have the door panel off as you're basically lying on the ground staring up into whatever light is in your eyes, and going in through the vent at the bottom of the door.

I just did what you need to do. Lever snapped, probably as a result of fatigue from no enough lubrication. In my opinion, the job is difficult for a number of reasons. That's coming from someone of highly questionable mechanical ability.

If you can get a replacement handle, that's much easier than trying to use your existing handle, because you will have to remove the pin rivet that holds the lever in. You can swap out the lock core. If you decide to use the existing handle and just install a new lever, whatever you do, don't bang on the rivet to get it out, because the little ears that hold it in break easily.

If you can have a shop do it all, there's no shame in that.
