The old ring and pinion noise question...
#41

Thanks Guys! I did have help, though. It took longer to load the tools.....

Well maybe I get to do it again (should be even faster this time) because of a leaking rear seal (freekin 8$ part) and for replacing the hanging mount rubber block.

OR, I could cut an access port in wheel well for rear cover and maybe squeak the mount up in place with the trans just lowered a little (Until it touches the suspension torque tube) Both from Germany and should be here this week.

Also have to do front suspension bushings. could see right through the right rear front A arm bushing housing. I put some temporary rubber in the hole until new ones arrive.

Going for a ride now...see yah!

PS: I listed my old transaxle on ebay last night, but then I thought that these are pretty rare and I might as well keep a spare for rebuilding.

Brian,

Hi, I'm the one with the GPWhite Cab (We've met locally).

I'm starting to have the ring & pinion bearing noise, too.

I've driven my car with another east side shop, which said the repair could wait based on the noise level,

but it's starting to bother me especially after reading this thread again and seeing that expensive "wall picture".

So you were happy with the Monty/AA combination to have your trans. repaired, right?

I've been to Redmond European with my other car, so I'll go this route unless you have other suggestions.

I'll have GT-LSD installed at the same time.

With the other shop, I was given a rough estimate of much more than it cost you, fyi.

Any suggestions are welcome.

Sho,

No problems at all. I am very please with Redmond European and AA.

P.S. There is a Porsche show at XXX RootBeer on Sunday May 11th. I'll be showing my 968 there. Would be great to see you and another 968 cab in a sea of 911's.
Tips:

2) definately need trans jack and lift
I'm late to this thread, but I also went with the used tranny as the price penciled out to about the same between used and a rebuild. I was lucky enough that a used but recently rebuilt tranny came available thru a member here. I've done the swap a couple of times in my garage by myself, with the car on jack stands and no tranny jack. It must go faster with a lift, friends and cold beer though.

You NW guys should stop by Pacific Raceways on May 10th or 11th to check out some racing. There will be a sea of BMWs and other stuff but also a few Porsches and one 968.

No, I did at least do it in a garage. If you leave the tranny carrier cross member attached to the tranny, you can lower and raise the whole assembly on a floor jack. The trick is keeping the thing balanced.

yeah. we thought about doing that...but with the car lifted, it was easier to remove the two mount bolts. Maybe I will try it this time....

my new ruibber trans mount and rear cover have arrived from Germany and are waiting for me to pick them up at the local Ann Arbor porsche dealer. Funny..Pelican could not get them, but Porsche could. Maybe they have a limit on outside buyers?

Buying at the OPC I noticed also over heren in Europe is easy. They have almost everything and when not the factory delivers it in 2 days. They surprise me also with their prices. Cheaper than I thought.

At the site from www.mittelmotor.de you can search for the original german price without 21% of tax and other costs.

Very helpfull!.

THANKS...will use them for next rare part!

Today, took out transaxle again...easier the second time. Found two dents in rear housing affecting rear cover seal. Die ground smooth and put in new inner plactic cover and new outer metal and rubber cover (~20$ in parts) sealed with permatex.

Also, did front bushings,, both sides shot.

THEN,, decided to move radiator a little back to the center, and uncovered where it had rubbed metal and now side cover leaking. Will get new rad from Lindsey racing.

eeeeesshhhh.....thought my Alfa was bad....

at least these are all still pleasant surprises....
