Out for a long drive today and noticed a whirring noise from tranny. I notice it at about 40mph on accel and decel and at other speeds in other gears. There is a no sound when the wheels and tranny are moving at the same speed. I am pretty sure it is the ring and pinion. But it is not the high pitched whine that I have read about with bearing failures. Is there a 'normal' sound from the R n P that you guys hear in your car?? or should there be no significant noise?



The sound is like straight cut gears meshing...no odd vibrations.. Car has 112000 miles, and I do not have any records......



Aslo, anyone know the link to the sound clip of failing 968 pinion bearing? site search engine keeps failing me.

The pinion bearing noise was not a high pitch whine for me, it sounded just like a roller bearing running around without a lot of lubrication, whirring would be a better word.

Mine made noise at freeway speed down to about 30-40 mph, as it got worse it would make noise down to about 20mph.



I had mine done a few months ago and the rear is totally silent. If you have any nose that is move dependent and that does not go away when you press in the clutch, I would suspect the pinion.

OK...went for short ride with carpet out and WOW...lots of noise from transaxle. I am almost certain it is R+P gears AND bearing. But not 100% because noise is not present without a load on the tranny. The load can be engine or from the axles. Noise is very bad at highway speed and not really present below 10-15mph. Occurs in all gears. The more load on the transaxle, the more noise.



Took my car in to a Porsche guy called Tim Pott in Ann Arbor. real nice guy..one man garage. MAny MAny years working on Porsche....Seems to know his stuff but says he has not really worked on 968 trannies.



I am pretty sure he can find and fix the problem.



Just as a check, anyone else know a good 968 tranny mechanic in the ann Arbor Plymouth region of metro Detroit??









Oh yeah....anyone know where to purchase a new R+P gearset, and the pinion bearings...?other Internal bearings?

There are very specific tolerances in the transaxle. Make sure that the shop you use has done them before or you'll be back...fighting for a redo.



You can buy the pinion bearing and the others and synchros etc at Pelican and Sunset Porsche.

I would download the .pdf and burn a CD. I had KINKO'S copy and bind it for me. I have used it a hundred times and it is way easier to find stuff. Every 968 owner should keep the PET handy...you'll need it.

Compare prices before you place your order, they vary greatly. When you call Sunset, ask for Jeff in Porsche parts.

Try changing the trans fluid. Use a good synthetic like Swepco or Redline.



This may or may not help, but it is cheap and easy.

Ring and pin gearset: 4300$ ....ouch...

Bearings (OEM) main pinion carrier: 100$

stub shafts (OEM) bearings: 50$ each



Spoke with German Transaxle also...very knowledgeable...seem like the right people for the job



Complete rebuild labor 975$..shipping both ways: 300$ ....parts?

Last question today:



I have a new gallon of SPIRAX HD sae 80W-90 (conforms to API GL-5 and/or MIL-PRF-2105E) but nothing stated about LSD



Porsche recommends 75-90. Any major difference besides weight?...meaning some people suggest LSD redline oil of the 75-90 variety...





Anyone use SPIRAX HD in their trans?

Tried Swepco. too thick for cold morning downshifts into first.

Now run Mobil 1 75w90...much better. I'll stay with it.

LSD transaxles need to run gear oil that SAYS made for LSD.



The oil will not help the pinion bearing whine. i have tried. I used a blend of 75% Swepco and 25% Lucas gear oil stabilizer, very thick without any real noise reduction. Also be careful, my pinion bearing was split into pieces yet still stayed together, had it come apart I would have had to replace more than just the bearings and synchros.



My PM pulled the trans and sent it to the trans shop for the rebuild. The price with all needed parts and labor was quoted at $1800. The r&r should be about $400. The trans shop should stand behind the rebuild for a year.



It sucks, but when you get it done you will be amazed how quite it is!

Yes, The main shop is REDMOND EUROPEAN 425-376-2655 PM is Monty.

The bill was $ 1800 for the rebuild ( all seals, bearings* and synchros, etc. )

R&R was $ 492.75

The trans shop is AA TRANSAXLE 425-788-4070 Owner is Daryl

( one year warranty that includes paying the PM to R&R the unit )

I supplied the pinion bearing that I got from Jeff @ Sunset Porsche.

Warranty...I like that



Priced out full set of bearings, gaskets and seals, and all synchros= ~1000$



I will probably pull it myself, open the case and see what's up......



NOTE: this was not a full bearing set. Full set of bearings including mainshaft rollers/needles, extra shims, special shaft clips, and several other parts was a bit more like 1400$

I AM Tired of not being able to drive my car. Only been out three times since buying it(and went off the road on the second trip). The hold on driving due to faulty transaxle. Found a used transaxle from DC recyclers and bought it today. Probably not a good idea but I'm impulsive. Anyway, while I save up for the original trans to get r+r'd, I wanted to get something in the vehicle so that i could drive it a little this spring, and do a proper rebuild on the other trans including a Quaife diff.



I figure that if I am under the car pulling out the original trans, I could just pop the other in place and be back on the road. Of course this is not really logical and probably a poor use of funds, but this is the power my 968 holds over me already......



Cost of used trans: 2000$

Cost of complete rebuild and Quaife: 3-4000$
