Odometer/Tripmeter issues (NOT gear related)
#1

I wanted to start a new thread because the other one is very confusing with people between alternative between gear related problems and electrical ones. My '92 ODO/tripmeter works when it wants too. It seems to stop working as soon as i go highway speeds. The next time i drive the car, it works again (however not immediately, there appears to be a need for cool off period). Now, that odometer/tripmeter does not work at all. I replaced the entire cluster with a '87 944 turbo one. I drove around town, all gauges worked and were accurate. Later in the day i had to travel on the highway, and the odometer/tripmeter stopped working with the 944 turbo cluster. Any ideas before i take it to my mechanic??

Full disclosure: A while back i was plagued with a wildly fluctuating coolant temp gauge, with the gauge commonly resting on the 10 o'clock position, gas tank gauge worked fine. That problem was fixed with the installation of a coolant/gas gauge from a 944.

not helpful to you, but i don't know how your gauges all worked, because the pin out is different. i just went through this with mine when i was trying to get the turbo tach to work. maybe it was just a 94 thing though, as the wiring is different on the 92 versus the 93, etc. but then i was also trying to fit the 951 tach into the 968 cluster, so maybe it was just the ribbons that were different

After I figured out the 180 mph speedo in the 944 turbo was different than the 968, i was like what the hell. So i just connected the whole 944 turbo cluster, everything works except for the turbo tach. The coolant gauge is giving me a brake pad warning light though, lol. My mechanic made sure all my grounds were in the correct are when troubleshooting the coolant gauge.

yeah - the tach wiring is what i found to be most different. i looked at the wiring diagrams, and they didn't jive, so rather than have potential problems with a wiring harness that is no longer available, i did not proceed with mixing and matching, but rather spiced the 951 boost gauge into the 968 tach and tapped into the wires it needed from the 968 cluster

now that i know that you have things not working, you may well find that your problem is related to that, and you just burned something out that was iffy to begin with

I think i misunderstood. The 944 turbo tach works, the boost gauge does not.

hmmm. as i remember, when i did it, the tach didn't work right. it was a very troubling and painful process though, and i was focused on making the boost gauge work properly, so i'm not sure anymore.

Hi there,

I have similar problems. The trip-meter works most of the time but once in a while it gets stuck and then the odometer doesn't tick over either. Several pushes on the "reset" button eventually gets it working again.

The other problem is that the rev counter seems to be having a mind of its own - when it works its not very "smoothly" and then it just suddenly stop working only to start again sudenly - sometimes when hitting a bump, which to me indicate a loose connection but the Independent Porsche Specialist that serviced it last week suggested I try source a new (2[sup]nd[/sup] hand) instrument cluster as he said it wasn’t a dirty connection.

Before I do that, has anyone experienced this or something similar?

Also, if I do get a new cluster, is it possible to set the milage/kms odometer so it matches my current one and the miles the car has done?

Cheers in advance for any advice.

One more time - font of my previous post a bit small to read........so here goes:
