Radar Detectors
#61

correct on the 65 - i had still had to choose between the invisibility and gps even when i upgraded from the previous 65 to the new one - i wish something had both - but the new 65 wins against the V1 hands down, so the choice was a lot easier than 3 years back when i had to choose between the V1 and the old 65

the gps units have an updatable and downloadable database of all known fixed position speed traps and red light cameras - it gives you a LOT more warning of those before you get there - here in california that is a huge advantage - it also allows the unit to tell you what speed you are doing as it goes off

i don't know what the "probably cause" laws are in virginia, but i do know the penalties are stiff for use of a detector - also, they can pretty much do whatever they want, and if they find it, explain it away later - you might be able to argue it in court, but do you want that hassle? i would be very careful about using a detector that is not invisible - i've driven out there and seen those guys hiding - not too tough on many of the roads to single you out

they may well have written the laws there like radar jammer laws here in california where possession results in felony charges - i think i would look into that carefully before rolling those dice, but that's me

and the new one to look out for is the VG4

94NINE68, my V1s were very old and at the time I was shopping around the upgrade was essentially just a trade in for a new unit and the cost was considerably more then $100. And regardless of the age of a V1 the resale value is somewhat amazing, which offset the cost of the RX65s quite a bit.

I felt that the gps versions were gimicky and didn't see the value in my local since photoradar and freeway cameras (which do not use radar) are everywhere in AZ. And they move the "stationary" units often.

another feature of the GPS units is to be able to "mark" a spot that you know falses - this has come in very handy in a couple of spots in my area that false k band regularly - i marked it and it ignores that spot

Let's hope that your local radar cop doesn't read your posts or he will find himself a shaded place right at the spot that you identified as false.

My old BEL finally gave up on me. Too much heat, or something. But it was trying to reset almost constantly and was so annoying that I was turning it off. not much good that way. I picked up an Escort 9500 iX. Cool features.

- GPS - you can lock a known fixed radar emitter, or the 3rd time you drive by the same emitter (I go by an annoying X every day on the freeway), the unit locks it in.
- Updateable database of redlight and speed cameras. That is useful, but annoying when you got through the same one every day. And, if the camera is near the freeway but not on the freeway, it gives you the warning. I need to see if I can lock those out.
- Auto sensitivity - less sensitive the slower you are going. Not sure what the equation is here, but if you are puttering around town at 5 mph and you go by a motorcycle cop with his radar on, the unit won't bother you. I also noticed that if I am approaching a red light camera intersection at speed the unit warns me earlier than if I am approaching slowly.
- Auto dimming. Of limited value but nifty nontheless.

I also picked up the $30 hard wire kit and spent some time on my back installing. Nice and clean. This is in my DD so I won't bother us with pictures. I may get another hard wire kit for the 968 and if so I'll post those.

Bottom line is that a GPS enabled unit has some very cool features that make it more useful and overall less annoying. Not sure it's worth the several $100 extra, but that's an individual choice.

about 5 weeks later the Escort took a dump. Oddest thing. The unit is cased in clamshell plastic - pretty standard design for small electronics. The top of the shell is just that - a shell with no hard attachments to any of the electronic guts. It is only attached to the bottom half of the clam by 4 pressure fit connections - I suppose so that you can pull it apart if needed. Anyway, I noticed that the rear half of the unit had separated a bit - I could see that the buttons on the top of the unit had dissapeared into the shell - huh... I tried to pinch it back together but no go - I was on the commute home so I figured to heck with it I'll take a look when I get home. 3 minutes later the front part of the clam separates and the unit goes "clunk" on my dash and begins to slide across to its demise. I caught it mid slide.

I called Escort for warranty info - the guy said "yeah, we are trying to figure out what went wrong with those". Bottom line is that they are working through a clear design or materials flaw. If you are considering that unit you might want to wait a while and call Escort to inquire about their progress before you buy. And perhaps get it directly from them so avoid picking up a pre-fix unit off the shelf somewhere. I'll post a couple of pics later and let you know how the replacement works out.

John Mohan at www.Radardetectors1.com can reprogram a V1 to elimate most false alarms. Very knowledgable on detectors. 773-816-6669
