[size="3"] This looks like a good deal. Check out this radar detector. Anyone have any experience with it?

Radar Roy doesn't think highly of any Cobra's. The only one he considered ok, was the higher model 9970.

i did a bunch of homework before buying mine - the only ones worth anything were the bel (GX65 and RX65) and the passport (i think it's 8500), which were essentially the same electronics inside

the passport has a rep for the case falling apart though

i have a bel for sale in the garage sale section - it's still in use in the SL550 right now, but i am ordering the GPS unit today to replace it (i've really been dragging my butt on that)

I just recently got the new Solo cordless. Love it. Since I move it around alot between cars and rental cars, the cordless feature is huge to me. If you're going cordless it's the only one to get. The new display is a big improvement over the old model.

I agree with Flash, I have the Passport 8500 GPS model, it works great. Picks up signals a long way away, and programming out false alerts is essential to me.

If it goes off, I slow down.

Isn't a laser detector basically a ticket detector, eg. if it goes off, you've basically already got a ticket?

no

contrary to popular belief, lasers are not foolproof, nor do they mean you already got a ticket

they are extremely accurate when they hit the target - the problem is that they need to hit the target - this means they need to hit something that reflects the light back - this is usually the license plate or a headlight - if it hits your detector, it may not have hit the plate, etc - the laser is only as good as the guy aiming it - it's much like a gun, where just because he has one, and it can kill you, does not mean that he can hit you with it

also, you might easily pick up a reflected beam from another car, which means you still have a shot at avoiding the ticket if you don't become the target

basically, it often alerts you that there is a cop in the area - most of them will use the radar or lasers as a primary filter, and then confirm it visually and then decide to go get you

so, while they are harder to escape from, just because it goes off does not mean you're nailed

I really like the new Escort combo detector/GPS. But for $695 it's a little steep considering I already have a detector (Valetine 1) and a GPS (Garmin). I looks if you don't own either one it's not a bad buy as you would probably spend that much in total for both of them. Also in Virginia (detectors are illegal) it looks like a GPS on your dash.

I have the Passport 9500ix (GPS). The case did fall apart - replaced under warranty no problem and it's been flawless since. Pricey as I recall but has paid for itself at least twice. I have it hard wired to both the 968 and RX8, with a portable cord in the van. Gotten to the point where I'll hardly walk down the street without it. Especially useful with the speed traps in PHX - was dead on whereas my trapster set up in the Garmin was no where near as precise nor accurate.

I have had a passport and it worked pretty well also. Thinking back over the number of years I have used various detectors, they have all paid for themselves. Of course the paying attention piece is a necessary component for this success.

While I still use my Garmin, I can't imagine ever buying another GPS unit since my Droid X phone does it for free.

I've had the Passport 9500ix for three years now and love it. Also I've been using their new iPhone app, Escort Live, for a year and absolutely love the combination. It has saved me many times and the few times I did get stopped I was able to slow down enough that I got off with a warning.

I highly recommend using the Passport/Escort Live combination.
