Questions from newbie
#1

Hi all!

Well I finally got my 968 - drove it home to upstate NY from KY this week with cooperation of the weather gods!

I was a long time 944NA driver and loved the car for its dead reliability and road/track manners. I did a lot of research selecting a 968 and think I got an excellent one - 74Kmi, good PPI, pinion bearing fixed, good cosmetics. Still, I have a tendency to fret over everything and would appreciate any and all input on my questions:

Oil consumption and level - when I got home (approx 800 mi) I checked oil level (Mobil 1 15/50) - it was about halfway between min/max marks. I was a bit alarmed but another Porsche owner told me it was fine. I added a bit - couple of days later it was back to the mid level again after some spirited, but not crazy, country driving. Is this normal for a 968 (car leaks no oil - previous owner was a fanatic about chasing down leaks)? I did not (don't yell at me) check oil level when I picked up car from previous owner.

"Thunk" - 2 or 3 times I have been driving in town and heard and felt a bit of a thunk from the rear end when shifting into 2nd, as if someone had reached under there and kicked the car underneath. Only happened a few times - I cannot make the car do it. Clutch feels fine, shifts well. Any ideas?

Lastly- How do folks drive your 968s? In the summer (upstate NY) my 944 WAS my car. I drove it every good weather day, any excuse to get behind the wheel including a trip to the grocery, whatever, putting 10K or more miles per year on it. Also did 3-6 days of DE a year. Do you folks use your cars as daily drivers or are they more the weekend car in reserve for fun? I am itching to drive this car!!

Again - thanks for helping out a newbie!

Welcome to the club!

As for oil consumption, I drop about 1/2 qt every 3,000 miles.

The 968 is my DD and is driven in all types of weather and in the year that I've had it, I've put on about 12k miles. I expect that to climb as I got rid of one of my vehicles that I drove fairly often. Now it's just the 968, tow vehicle, and trackcar.

Hey, I used to use that photo of your car as a wallpaper. I thought it was a nice looking car. If you don't mind what did you end up paying? Good luck with her and keep us informed of her progress.

He had it for $17,500 on Porsche Classifieds. Good Deal! I wish you all the best with her. She was on my list at one point. My favorite color combo.

The car is still listed on Porsche Classifieds!! And NOT by the previous owner. Someone was hoping for a bite on his ad there, probably intending to buy the car from the real owner (he had it advertised for $15.5 on 968Net where I found it) and sell for a quick profit.

I told previousowner about the ad on PClassifieds and he was surprised to say the least!!

Porsche-classified is always slow to update their sold cars, since they do consignment and don't hear from the owner often if it's sold.

I actually was talking with them and the PO on this car, took a pass because it wasn't my top color combination.

If you email Kim @ Porsche Classified I bet he'll have it taken off. He probably doesn't know it sold.

I bought mine last December - 92 Cab Tiptronic 64,500 miles - and after about 1500 miles my oil has stayed very constant.

No thunks, and I - and a lot of people on here - totally use as daily drivers. I mean - how could you not?

Congrats, and welcome. My 968 cab is my DD, with Blizzaks from late November to early April. I'm averaging nearly 25k miles a year and can't think of why I'd want to drive anything else.

Well this oil level thing is puzzlin'

Last time I checked (after car sitting overnight) it was around 1/2 between max/min. I added a bit, making about 3/4. After some driving I checked again - now it seems just slightly over max mark!! Very slightly overfilled.

Some evil-doer is adding and subtracting oil from my car?? I make sure dipstick is seated when reading and wait about 3 minutes before checking after turning off.

Its a mystery. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/huh.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

Oh, and no thunks today.

I've never had to add oil to my car yet. When it comes time to change the oil, it has dropped to the half way mark.

Mine too is a daily driver. I plan on driving it and maintaining it till the wheels fall off!

Welcome aboard! The 968 is a wonderful car and the 968 owner community is one of the most helpful I have been involved in, love the color combination too. "Old Blue" is my daily driver and I think that frequent use is good for the car. Porsche considers a bit of oil usage to be "normal" and I have the same experience. If I drive for a couple of hundred miles at speeds over 80 MPH my 968 will use one half quart of oil. Around town driving does not use any at all. No idea what your "thunk" might be, but it would be a good idea to get it up on a lift and check around back there. Could be something loose in the spare tire, jack storage area too. Good luck, Bob Blackwell.

Just curious, when do you check the oil? If you check it right after shut-down you won't get an accurate reading - the oil needs a little time to settle into the pan. I always wait 20-30 minutes before checking or check the next morning.

Hmm, back in the days of full-service the gas station attendant would come back and say "you're oil is a little low"... right after turning off the engine.

The "thunk" may be a tired CV joint. Jack-up the rear with the trans in neutral and p/brake off. Hold the axle and try to move the wheel - there should be no negligible slop.

I am also new to the 968 scene(but owner of 4 different 944's over the last 20 yrs).Just acquired a black 92 968 coupe with a little over 80 thousand on it.Runs great(big performance up grade over my last unit-83 944).Won't drive it too much(weekends and golf trips).Obviously, after making the 944 variation for 10 plus years, they had figured out a few things with this version. It seems to be a combination of their(Porsche) lineup at that time in space(928,944,911).Any idios beyond the normal 944 gremlins(timeing/balance belts, seats, dash, ect) to be wary of?Look forward to getting a few pics and posting.

Definately check Power Steering Hoses and Heater Control Valve. If you don't already have a spare DME realy, buy one and keep a spare (<$30 from Partagon).

If you can get underneath check Motor mounts, Caator blocks and Clutch imnspection port (Plug always seems to be missing)

Welcome!
