Got a 968!! And some questions.
#1

Found a triple black beauty in Atlanta. 1994, 126k miles, 17" wheels, big black brakes, 6 speed, maybe sport suspension. I had discussed a lot of details with the guy and went over to look at it Saturday. No real issues with the car at all. I was super pleased. Got a good price on it, and the guy is buying my 944na. Barring any surprises, I am grinnin' like an idiot!

Couple issues/questions:

1. How is my stereo set up? I have cass head & CD changer - factory. The driver side speakers won't play for squat. Sounds like a bad amp. Does it have a separate amp, or is it contained in the head? I have a tweeter on top of the doors, a 4" below that, and a 5.25" further back on the door. Some at the rear seats, as well.

2. Where is my option code sticker located? I didn't see it back there where 944 ones are.

3. What all is supposed to be in my toolkit? Looks like it has everything, but I thought there would be more wrenches.

4. I would love a FSM on CD if somebody might know where I could get one. Failing that, a Hayne's. I had both for my 944.

5. With my luck, I got on a nail Saturday. Wasn't there when I got the car. Anyway, I got back on the road with Fix A Flat. I permanently plugged the tire now and it's fine. Would you go get the tire cleaned out (dismount & remove FAF)?

Stuff I plan to do:

a. Belts were done 50k ago at a Porsche dealer and just checked by the guy I bought from. I plan to go ahead and replace the timing and BS belts. Should I replace the auto belt tensioner?

b. I don't know what oil he is running in it, but I am swithing it to Mobil 1 and Mahle filters.

c. I have a DME (fuel pump) relay from my 944 (same part). Should I buy a spare fan relay? Any others that will keep me down?

d. Replace cam tensioner pads (recc by Todd84944)

That's about it. Couple tiny trim items with it, but she's a beaut. So, without further ado, here's my baby!

Bart,

Congrats on the triple black. That's one of my favorite color combinations!! She is a beauty!!

Option codes should be in the rear hatch under the carpet. I think they were also in the user's manual. Otherwise, I'm told a dealership should be able to look 'em up for you.

You can find the Service Manual in this post.

Yeah, if it was me, I'd have the goop cleaned out of the tire. I'm sure there's compelling reasons, but I'd just do it for the peace of mind.

Welcome!

1. stock deck pretty much sucks for quality - but it was stock, so a lot of guys want to keep it - yes there would be an amp for your setup, under one of the seats

2. option sticker should be under the carpet in the rear

3. there are only a couple of wrenches - i'll take a pic later today

4. there is a shop manual in pdf here on this site that you can download

5. yes - absolutely - and get a vulcanized patch installed from the inside

a. the auto tensioner is hydraulic, so if it's not leaking, leave it be - check when the rollers and waterpump were last done though

b. mobil 1 is a good choice - those of us in warm climates run 15-50 - mahle is a decent filter

c. heater control valve would be a good one

d. sweet - carefully inspect the gears when you are doing that

A lot of owners are replacing theirs with more rugged units, BTW.

Here's more info.

yeah - i can see the pic - just can't remember if there were 2 or 3 - the thing has been in a cabinet for over a year

no, no relay for HCV - the stock valve itself is prone to rather sudden failure, so either a coupler tube, or a new valve is wise as a spare - as a preemptive strike, you could change it to the metal one eitner was mentioning - you will need to adapt the vacuum line though, so not the best "on the road emergency fix" choice - if you change that out to metal though, it should effectively eliminate the need for a spare

Thanks flash, on both accounts. I had previously read the thread Guard's Red had posted and will be calling AutoZone today. I'll check my car to make sure it hasn't been upgraded, but I will upgrade to the metal - looks like a better solution.

I'll study your photo there and see if I can find the missing pieces - the jack and handle are there.

looks like just the t-bar and the allen "speed wrench"

t-bar may be a cab only thing, thoguh that sounds silly to me - don't know - it's used when going in to manual mode - not sure where else though

no clue what the allen thing is for

That metal HCV thread is a good one. Flash, did you ever developyour other method? I was thinking initially that when I replaced it, I would build a little AL heat shield for the valve. Is the valving method inside the metal one decided to be sufficient? I don't want my HVAC blowing hot air all the time.

I'll see if my manual says what's supposed to be in my kit. I'll substitute with some other tools, I guess. Any other tools people highly recommend having?

BTW, I never did find that stereo amp. Looked under the seats with a flash light and didn't see it. Also looked over under the glove box. I'm sure I am overlooking it, but I think I would know an amp if I saw it <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/unsure.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

I was thinking of keeping the OEM Porsche look for a while if I got it going, but probably go ahead and do the Alpine iPod deck. Any good how to on replacing the radio/speakers? Don't want to break any trim pieces or anything. I do still have the radio manual from Porsche, so I will look at it.

i've not actually seen one yet, but since youhave the 8 speaker setup, it is my understanding that you would have one - i'm sure somebody has a shot of one - i seem to remember that at least one person actually had it under the carpet

You really can't see the amp(s) under the seat(s). They are there - or at least one of them is. Actually are classified as a 'booster." I have one under each seat. Driver's side powers the front and passenger the back. These cars have interesting combinations of amp and speaker setups, to say the least.

Yep. I think Dynaudio and Alpine will take over in a factory look alike role when I get all my checkups & mechanical PM items done. Any good websites showing some 968 installs? I'd love to stick some Dyn components up front and possibly add an 8" in a rear KLA box. I'll Google and see if I can find an install.

if you choose an alpine with parametric eq, you will be in MUCH better shape than the stock unit
