MISC questions...Sideview mirror & wheel crest?
#1

Well tonight i pulled the 968 out of storage (has been sitting there for about 4 months) to go out with. When i get back to the car (was parked in an outdoor parking lot). I noticed two things. Someone stole my drives side rear wheel crest/cap. They also somehow cracked my sideview mirror (not the housing...just the mirror).

So yea, i was pissed...my car was vandalized....lucky it was only these two tings.

So my question for the guys here...do i need to replace the housing and mirror or can i just buy a new mirror? And where is the best place to get either or?

Second, i have 18" Tech Hollow Spoke wheels, do the same Wheel Caps/Crests that fit on 996/997 cars fit my wheels? i searched ebay, and want to make sure i buy the right Cap and/or caps (i just need one). The bummer about the cap is, i need to go get it painted to match the rest of my caps & wheels (they were refinished in paint code VOL 932-Anthracite)

Any help would be appreciated.

Measure your center caps, That is a sure way to know. I believe you can buy just the mirror glass.

Call sunset Porsche in Oregon.

You may have found this information by now, but I replaced the driver's side view mirror on my car in the last few months and it was about $70 from Sunset. You need to insert a straight screwdriver in the hole on the bottom of the mirror housing and twist it so the locking clip releases. The full instructions for removal and installation are in the service manual.

What side is the broken mirror glass on? I replaced my driver's side with a European convex glass, and I might still have the mirror glass I removed. Alternatively, do as I did and gain some added safety.

Sorry to hear about the vandalism. 1 center cap??? What type of thief is this?

Wouldn’t be surprised if the mirror was some sort of accident. I once returned to my car, in the company lot, to find the same mirror damage. There were only light scratches on the mirror housing but it appears that another car in passing squeezed the mirror housing and it shattered the glass while the housing flexed back into place.

This wasn’t the 968 but I’m guessing the housing will react similar.

Just a thought.

not that this is the case here necessarily, but those dumb center caps pop off too - they frequently fit loosely, and are constantly spinning - in fact, ron is due here for me to mod his so they don't fly off

No, it was there when i parked, i do a walk around everytime i park and everytime i'm about to get into my car. I foud my cenetr cap to be missing a cracked mirror.

I was parked away fro other cars at the end of a Casino lot....

My center caps dont spin either. I wasnt aware that was an issue with these. They are all pretty damn snug.

bummer - you got lucky that yours fit well though - many don't

anyway - that makes me crazy - i just had that happen with the tow plug on the denali - i have a locking pin that holds it in - i dropped it at the shop for some work - picked it up - no plug - i left the key to the pin in the cubby - my bad - i guess they wanted the plug that said "under the influence of a bernese mountain dog" more than i did
