Question about value-'92 Coupe
#1

Folks, this is my first post here though I used to lurk in the past at the 968net.com site several years ago. My dad bought a 1992 gran prix coupe, navy interior, tiptronic back in early 1998 from a friend. He may be interested in selling it (to me) and forgetting for a moment that I am family and would get a break on price, I want to figure out roughly what it's worth. It only has 30k on the clock, which is verifiable via records. First owner was a woman, got tired of it quickly and got an SUV. My dad's friend bought it, drove it regularly for a year and then sold it to him. He just doesn't drive it often. Always garaged since new, so pretty much a bit of a time capsule. He has a very competant porsche mechanic who services it so it is up to date on belts, seals, the major items. What I don't know is if the DME relay has ever been changed out or if the heater control valve has been replaced. I do know neither have failed in the time my dad has owned it.

So, I don't have all the option numbers to give but here's the basics:

-Gran Prix White exterior, navy leather interior

-Tiptronic (wish it was a 6-speed)

-16" wheels, though it has center caps with gold porsche logo instead of the standard black, not sure what that option is, if it is a one-off thing or part of a 'package'.

-Everything else works, sunroof, rear wiper, etc.

Rest of the car is pretty much standard, excellent condition.

Only thing it needs is some seals to be replaced around the exterior door handles, they have dried out and have cracked. Figure that isn't a huge deal. The other seals on the car (rear window, door, etc) are all in great shape.

So, what would the market roughly support for this car? Obviously kbb.com is way off, too low.

Thanks in advance for the advice,

Sears

first off, welcome welcome - glad to have you here - make sure to check the calendar for upcoming events i your area

second, let me send my condolences about the MGB - having owned a number of them over the years, raced them, and had a shop specializing in them, i am keenly aware of the ups and downs of that car, and will hoist a brew to you later today, honoring the bravery of ownership

third, to the 968, 92s are tough - some people prefer them, some shy away from them

they have some interesting cosmetic features specific to that year, but also some mechanical complications - depending on the buyer, they could affect value - the AC is R-12, which is an expensive problem if it goes - the rods are smaller, which is a problem for a race car, but likely not for a street car

anyway, i would guess that car would be worth about 15k if it's really clean - the interior would have to be in really good shape though, with no leather damage - the tip doesn't help, nor does the white, or the 16s, but the low mileage helps a LOT - a tad more if it has LSD

just a note on "up to date" repairs - age is as much of a factor as mileage, so the belts should not be more than 3 years old, regardless of mileage

Flash, thanks for the welcome. Hopefully I'll have this car before long...to address a couple concerns, the A/C has been converted to R-134a a couple years back when it started losing freon. My Dad doesn't hold back much. I would need to check and verify that the belts are less than 3 years old, but that will/can be addressed, no problem.

The leather is perfect, no wear. We're both very careful getting in and out of the car and there is no sun damage either. It basically sleeps in the garage constantly...he needs to drive it more.

The dash has some tiny hairline cracks around the defrost vents, but this seems pretty typical.

How do I tell if the car has limited slip? Is that an option code I could view under the rear carpet?

Also, thanks for the note on the MG...I love that car. Not sure why I want to add a 3rd car, but whatever, it's a sickness.

The B just got a fresh engine rebuild, so it's pretty quick. Hotter cam, racing headers, exhaust...you know the deal. Fun car, plenty of personality. It is also a family car, my uncle bought it new in 74, one of the last chrome bumpers.

well, it sounds like you have a great 968 - enjoy that

the option sticker should be under the carpet in the rear left corner (driver side) - option 220 or 221 (depending on when the car was built)

the B sounds fun too - i miss that car - WAY faster than the 968 ever thought about being, including i the corners, but completely impractical for los angeles - some day i will build another one though - i just need enough space to store it - as it stands now, after adding the soon to arrive TR-4A, there will be 4 cars here, in a 3 car garage - i already have to store the race trailer - there are already plans for 2 more cars as well - the B would make 7

lol - now i think i need to hoist one for myself

Was a tiptronic available with LSD?

not sure - i do not think that was an option that would be listed on a tip - i've never heard of it, but i just don't know for sure

I'm a 92 fan. I've owned two 968s and they were both 92s. Good comments from Flash. I'll add that you can also find that option sticker (called the vehicle information sticker) on the second page of the maintenance manual. Post the codes and we'll tell you what you have. Also, as Flash mentioned, the early 92s have some unique features. What is your VIN? I can tell you if you have an early car.

Jeff, thanks for the tips. I have asked my dad to get the option codes for me and I'll post once he gets a chance to read them. I don't have access to the VIN either, though I can get it as well (I live 7 hours from my folks). I'll be back soon with more info hopefully.

Thanks!

Ok here's some info:

The VIN is WPOAAZ96XNS820277

The top of the vehicle ID sticker has:

L908 SW

CO2-Catalytic Converter

XD4-Porsche Crest Rim Caps

249-Automatic Transmission

331-AM/FM Cassette & 2 door speakers

437-Comfort Seat Left

454-Auto Speed Control

650-Sunroof

Bottom says:

09991

So what's everyone's opinion? Seems pretty standard issue.

Thanks!

Scott, I appreciate the welcome.

Here the decoder.

09991

I believe this indicates that the car was built under the Exclusiv Program, could be any special order item on the car.

Welcome !

Thanks, I missed 09991 mixed in there somehow. The window sticker is with the car, I imagine that might outline what the Exclusive options were that the original owner picked out. Nothing jumps out at me as being overly unique though.

All you had to do was order the painted crests and that was an exclusive option and got 09991 listed as well.

As for the car, pretty standard option wise. SX tells me it has the marine blue (dark) partial leather interior.

It is an early car and should have two unusual features:

1) Recessed hood badge - Take a look at the hood. The Porsche emblem should be set into the hood. Only the first few hunderd 968s have this feature.

2) Edged rear 968 emblem - The rear 968 emblem is slightly larger and the numbers have a sharp edge on them where the later emblem has rounded edge. Again, only the first few hundred cars have this.

Can you give me the production date of the car. It is found on the dirver's side door jam. I'm thinking October 1991?

Jeff, I don't recall if the car has the recessed crest on the hood. My memory says it isn't. Build date is 01/92, in service date was 3/17/92.

Maybe not quite as early as we thought.

Guys, just wanted to say thanks for your help. I think I've gotten enough info so that my Dad and I can figure this out. Hopefully I'll be back shortly with a 968 in my possession.

Thanks!

Interesting. cab NS840277 came out of the factory in October 1991. It is interesting that coupe NS820277 wasn't produced until January of 1992. I just sold my other 1992 cab. It had a January 1992 build date and the VIN on it was NS840544!!! Matter a fact, NS840629 also was produced in January 1992. Clearly they were a lot busier building cabs in during the first few months of production. So, yes, you won't have those early 968 features. Good luck with the purchase!!!

One quick follow-up question: I was telling a friend about the 968 and one thing he cautioned me to watch out for was unforeseen problems with taking an older low-mileage car into more of a daily driver mode. He had a friend who purchased a '92 MB 300E with 38k on the clock and it wound up having a host of bizzare problems which I never had with my 87 300E and he never had with his 89 300E, and most of these faults were seen related to the fact it sat for so long.

Now one thing I would note, my dad's 968 doesn't sit for months without being driven, it's probably driven every 2 weeks or so.

Thoughts?

I wouldn’t worry about it to much...that said...you need to be aware and look/listen until you get to know the vehicle and by that I mean some seat time. Once in the car for a while you will become accustom to the noise it makes...any changes should be investigated.

I purchased a 94 with 12k miles on it and it hadn’t been driven for a year. Changed all the fluids including the brakes and gearbox and away I went...now 45k miles and due for some belts.

Don’t worry Be Happy you’re in a 968!
