968 Club Sport question
#1

Dear learned members,
Although I love my 968 tip coupe dearly I do hanker after a Club Sport. One has now come on the market (in NZ) which in itself is as rare as hen's teeth. Its a 1994 CS in dark blue and is advertised as having the 'comfort package'. The comfort bits being an electric sunroof, electric boot release and standard cloth sport seats rather than the excellent race ones. Before i get too excited at the prospect would you know if the M030 suspension and brake package was standard on the CS - I always presumed it was and one of my main reasons for trying to find one (combined with the 6spd). The idea of a 'comfort' CS seems to go against the whole idea and a sunroof is certainly weight where its not needed, but opportunities to get one are rare.

thanks

I believe the CS would have included the M030 package (brakes and suspension). Ask the seller to send you a pic of the option code sticker - that will tell all.

I am not sure aboout the NZ market, but in Europe M030 and M220 was not a standard option. To the CS purists the cofort package is a no go, but I think it's a personal thing i.e. do you really want to sit in bucket seats with no adjustment?

Hi, I think I know the car. I also purchased a 968CS in NZ, though it now lives in Aus, and saw it there on display days. Anyway, from memory that is a true 968CS and was some sort of custom order to get the comfort pack too. It may even have electric windows - I struggle to recall. I think it did have the MO30 brakes, and shocks - but of course check it out. If you need help on the specs and want an inspection, try Peter at Motorscience, also in Auckland, for help. There is also something of a 968 fanatic in NZ, you could contact him via the NZ Porsche club - Bill Abercrombie is his name - no kidding he knows everything about every specific car.

Good luck.

The M030 Option was just that - an option. It was not standard on the CS.

I am not sure what (or if there is) Porsche Cars of NZ - but Porsche Australia can tell you everything you need to know about a car if you can give them the VIN number. They will tell you where it was sold, when, what options were fitted, etc. It is a good check to see if the car has been molested or not and is the genuine article or not.

My bad... Thought the CS came with the M030 option as part of its normal build.

no worries - common assumption - porsche did a good job of plastering the media with the full-on version and never talked about any other

while most of the CS cars did come with all the bells and whistles, there were quite a few that were different and lacked a few features - there were also other differences in some of them - there is a red one that i know of that had cloth seats

Cloth seats with porsche script are actually quite common on the CS. People that could not afford a regular 968 often opted for the comfort version of the CS because it was cheaper. The UK also introduced a CS with comfort options and called it a Sport, the Sport was not sold anywhere else.

Is the weight difference significant between cloth and leather?

no, but the weight difference between the bang zoom hard back club sport seats and the regular ones is (about 25lbs each less) - the difference between 8 way power and manual is also significant (about 8 lbs each)

Wow, 50lbs total is quite a bit. I've read that when people remove their seats for repairs and such that they are always surprised at just how heavy they are. When you consider the cost of after market seats, along with the lighter weight, it makes a lot of sense to go that route.

Then what would a 968S come with standard ?

Well my original question has now been made irrelevant by that fact that the car is now off the market - presumably sold. The owner never did answer my question re the M030 option. The car was marketed with about a NZ$8000 premium over a standard coupe (maybe US$5k?). Beyond the obvious rarity and kudos of having a CS, to know that not all CS came with the M030 pack, means I can widen my search for a good value 6spd and upgrade/reduce weight to get the same driving experience.
In the meantime I'll continue to thoroughly enjoy my tip coupe.

Perhaps the seller didnt really know the car and couldn't answer your question.

Your in a good position. You already have 968 which makes being patient and understanding what your buying a lot easier. When you test drive a 68 you'll feel the improvements & the pep over your current 68 or the lack of it and know just what your getting into. Minimizing the chances of regret. You know all the right questions to ask and can sift through the Bull.

Keep us posted Clive.
