pwer steering fluid

Went to buy automatic tranny fluid Dexron II type D as in manual to top off power steering fluid and do not see that on the shelf anymore at auto parts store.

What are you using instead?

I'm not seeing much Dex III on the shelves these day's either. It has been replaced with Dex IV and synthetics.



If you can find Dex III great, if not Dex IV is fine. Just read the label. It will state backwards compatibility with prior versions of the product. When I just recently bought some Dex IV, I ended up with a lesser expensive brand because it was the only one that stated on the label backwards compatibility with Dex II, and Dex III. Others may have been compatible, but didn't state on the label. I'll look in my garage when I get home to find the brand name. But is was one of the ones from Pep Boys.

pretty common stuff. Most of the new stuff you find on the shelf is backward compatible. I'm looking at the label of the stuff I used (Carquest ATF Dex/Merc) and it is compatible with Dex, Dex II, Dex IIE, Dex IIIG/H

Any reason I shouldn't use Dexron VI?

The label says its backward compatible with Dex II and III.

Don't just top off your power steering fluid - replace it. Use a turkey baster or a siphon to drain as much of the fluid out of the reservoir as you can, then fill it up with fresh fluid, start the car, and turn the wheel to the extreme right and left about ten times. Turn off the engine, drain the fluid from the reservoir again, fill, and repeat the process. Do this 3-4 times. You will significantly extend the life of your power steering pump, as well as possibly eliminate some noises you may be experiencing. I strongly recommend that everybody do this. It's really good preventative maintenance.
