Prices at the pump
#21

just to put things in perspective, i am about to embark on a 2500 mile road trip

11mpg in Jeep towing 968 for 2200 miles at 2.50/gal = $500

18mpg in 968 playing hard for 300 miles at 3.00/gal = $50

16 mpg in 968 on track for 50 miles at 6.29/gal = $20

so, almost 600 bucks in fuel this next week - WOOHOO!

Just drove past my "favorite" Mobil station - the price for 93 octane is $2.799, 16 cents a gallon higher than it was yesterday. Sure makes me long for (at least that part of) the "old" days.

When I was in N.D. in the late 60's, the Gulf stations would give you a orange ball the size of a golf ball with a fill up to go on your radio antenna to keep the snow removal machines from hitting your car. Yea, about 30 cents a gal.

Flash, if you get 16 mpg on the track, push harder. The best I've gotten is about 12 mpg on my track tanks. This compares to my long term (55k miles) of 22.6 mpg (including the track tanks).

for some reason, i seem to get higher mileage than most folks though, and i am only guessing at this point - only had this on one track for 5 laps - i romp it pretty hard every time i get in it and the worst i have seen so far is 18 - i was literally guessing at some number just for the sake of a budget number - 12 would not surprise me though - frankly, that part is the least expensive of the weekend
Remember the steak knives Shell oil would give away with each fill up? How about a complete set of pilsner glasses? What else does anyone remember that was a promo give-away?
I still use the pilsner glasses I got and also the rocks glasses as well as Washington Capitals glasses with a tiny little mobil logo.

$ 4.49 ( 91 oct. ) this morning at one Shell station about 15 min from where I live. The Chevron across the street from it $ 4.39. But you can still find it at most stations in this area between $ 3.79 and $ 3.99.

If that's what "they" say, then I'm sure it will be...funny how that works isn't it? It will really suck to see a fill up on the 968 hit $100.00. I'm already hitting close to that on my cargo vans and just put $76.00 in my Sport Trac...and that's all regular 'ol 87! I'll keep running the 944 as my daily driver...downgraded to 89 a while back, still runs great and gets around 25MPG on my moderate 24 mile commute.

get used to it - the best estimates of the worlds useable oil is 40 years - most of the fields in the US are already dried up - any drilling in the remaining areas (offshore and alaska) would do unimaginable environmental damage that would have huge impacts everywhere else - that means more dependence on imported oil - that means higher prices

we need public transportation - period - unfortunately it won't happen until it becomes so expensive to drive that people get off their butts and do something about it - i've said it before, but we need a HUGE public transportation tax at the pump that is dedicated to developing new public transportation

now, if only we could trust the government to use the money for that........

i feel sorry for the next generation

I paid $3.37 in C'ville, VA today for 93 octane. This is just one cent shy of the most I have ever paid for 93 octane, for I dropped $3.38 near Albany, NY last August. I have a feeling that I'm going to be breaking this "record" soon, unfortunately...

I've stopped paying attention how much money I'm paying at the pump, so I just look at how many liters I'm putting in. Pay with credit card and save the headache for later. Maybe I'm lucky in that I carpool to work everyday, and the car is really only taken out on the weekends. Of course I end up driving 100 or so miles every weekend, but I've been managing to fill up only every couple of weeks, if not once a month.

Public transportation, ugh. I'd sooner get a scooter or bike

I agree about the public transportation thing; as a matter of fact, my daily driver is an Austin Capital Metro Ford E-350 van. But the sobering thing is that we have nine riders on our vanpool roster, but have trouble getting more than about four to ride on any given day, and I've never seen any correlation between ridership level and gas prices. I'm afraid gas prices will have to go considerably higher before people significantly alter their transportation habits.

The other challenging thing about public transportation is that while it was easy to build into cities that experienced their major growth before the development of the automobile, it's much more difficult to shoehorn an public transportation system (subway, light rail, etc.) into cities that "grew up" since the invention of the car. It's not impossible, just difficult and very expensive.

Wish I had a solution. At least we can, for a short time, anyway, take heart in the fact that adjusted for inflation, gas prices are still not quite at an all-time high, but they're getting very close.

I paid $3.179 for 87 this week at my local Sheel to fill up the Miata. Because I take public transportation into Philadelphia I fill up approximately every 3 weeks. My Trans pass costs $181/month....all told, my commute works out to about $55.00/week. (more oney for 968 goodies)

Sadly, no time to drive the 968, so $0 for gas in the last month

Regards,

Jay

ayn takes the train into downtown LA - says it's the BEST decision she's ever made - no more stress in traffic - no more wear and tear on the car - WAY lower cost - it was costing us about 600 a month, between gas and parking, not counting wear and tear - now it's about 270, and the company picks up most of that

and she has reclaimed the time - now she can, read, work, or just relax - drove to work? who needs it?
