Great cars at great prices.
#1

A list of cars that I find to be a steal of a bargain. I have found these cars both fun to drive and good for a few head turns around the right crowds. So if I had about 15K to spend on a ride it would go as follows:

1994 Porsche 968- Oh how long will the masses sleep on this Timeless beauty. The lines from bumper to bumper are artistic. And not just from the side, but every angle. I may argue that the car is sexiest viewing it from the 3rd story of a building, yes, It’s that good. Not to be taken lightly is the name of the manufacturer, The 968 is a Porsche! A company w/ a true racing heritage and a name that’s well respected. The engine is magnificent. Who would of thought that a NA 4cylinder producing 240HP could pull as strong as this one does? Wind it pass 4grand and the thrill of speed transfers through your nerve endings as you effortlessly slice through the wind at speeds of over 120MPH. The car also boast great comfort for all shapes and sizes. Simply perfect in both cab and coupe forms. It even has the best forum.

93 Mazda RX7 TT - Most Japanese sports cars lack driver car communication through the steering wheel, I found this to be the case with the supra, which I luv!, the MR2, 300 and 350 Zs. But Unlike the others Mazda got it right. IMO that car still looks good today. I think its a shame so many are kitted up to look like, well RICE. The light weight rotary turbo set up complements each other well. Its a true point and shoot car as I found out yanking it through corners in the back twisties of MD. The car is also rare, with a short production run and the Rotary engine makes it unique. A good looking car inside out, with good performance. One down side does come to mind, they have been known to catch fire, something to do w/ the vacuum lines.

BMW E36 M3
- looks a little dated in 08 but the lines are nice nonetheless. i found the stock seats to be very comfortable, even for a big guy, and the fun factor brings nice grins. Add to that the support and mods available and you have a great fun affordable car.

Acura NSX- This isn't a budget car as the others are but a 94 can sell for about 15K and that’s a lot of car for the money. Well unless you’re talking speed. The good- This car still looks great today. VERY clean lines a good example of how a MR setup should look and perform. I've seen this car; even with its limited HP win many events (street fire.com). In the corners it’s simply brilliant! Very hard to out pace it.

Confession- I have only been in a 92 model and man was the power lacking. I realized that it feels fast because your so low to the ground and that every crack in the asphalt is magnified as this suspension was stiff. But run next to anything else in its class on a straight and your going to have a bad day, a very bad day! However, based on head turn ability and the all important fun factor. This car makes my list.

Look forward to your comments, especially if you’ve had 1st hand experience with the cars above.

always loved the looks of the NSX, and on appearance criteria alone it might even edge the 968 in my book..

i'm surprised you can find a 94 for that price.. always thought ( mistaken, obviously ) that they'd be about 50% higher than our cars, all else being equal; condition, year, mileage, etc..

968 - well, i think we all know about that one

RX7 - love the car - so do the mechanics whose kids need braces - everyone i have ever talked to who has owned one has a love/hate relationship with the car

E36 M3 - always fell short in my book - a sedan with just enough poop to be deceiving - not a horrible compromise car, but needed at least another 50hp in US form - lots of mods available though - not al all in the same league as the others in your list, but certainly the most practical - big owner following too

NSX - totally useless car that looks fast just sitting still - always liked it, but found it very commonplace and far too frequently in the hands of the ricer/bling crowd - poor man's 308 - like the 308, not terribly fast, nor the best handler, but sexy nonetheless

I'd have to agree on all points, except this one.
NSX - nor the best handler, but sexy nonetheless
for the money, Id say the NSX is easily in the top 5 when it comes to handling. Feels soo right!

this may merely be the difference between cornering and handling, and the common misnomer of confusing the terms - they are two very different things - the nsx corners very nicely, but as for handling, i find it lacks feel and response, as well as a firm planted weight transfer - but, then again, i am not a mid engine fan either, and it feels very mid engine

point taken. Steering response in the NSX was lacking communication as so many Japanese cars do. This is Y the 968 tops the list. It simply has it all!

funny, i thought ( still think ) the steering response in my 944 beats the 968 hands down. i can't imagine the weigbt difference alone would cause that, must be something else. I hate to think what the steering response is like in the NSX, if it's not even up to 968 feel..

anyway, I bring this up because I think in terms of great cars at great prices the 944 belongs up there with the rest unless it was left out because it's too close to the 968 ..

Exactly. I was going to write up the 951 as the turbo gets extra points on the speed side of things. I also love the old 928s which can b had for about 15K.

your comment on the feel of the 68 has me wondering, what other cars have you driven that you feel is on par w/ the 968 in terms of handling and car/driver communication?

not many on par with the 968, really.. I have driven a few sports cars including some in the $100K + category and to a large extent found them lacking in that area. As for the 968 I was referring simply

to the steering response where, for example I found the Honda S2000 (all stock ) to have a significantly greater "go-kart " feel to its steering, which is something I prefer.

Oddly, I had expected the Carrera 4 would feel better than the 68, given the AWD and all that, but did not find that to be the case.

all that being said, it should be known my butt-o-meter is not that well tuned <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/rolleyes.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> it takes some serious differences to be at play before I notice anything..

Any NSX you find for $15K is not going to be a very good example. The S2000 handles very well but the steering feel is not that great with the electronic assist it uses.

Never driven a S2000 or a miata. But from what I've read, I assume that they could make this list. Both are too small for my taste.

I recently seen a 92 w/ high mileage go for 17,300. A few grand above my 15K limit. They do tend to stay right at that 20K mark.

I did a search on Cars.com for an NSX...there is a beauty for $10K at a salvagers...

It seems that you would have to put up $40Kish to find a good one. For the incremental investment (call it $20k) I would rather have the best 968 on the planet (OK, maybe second best Flash).

I'm not saying its common place but I have seen NSXs go for as low as 15K and I often see them in the low 20s w/ high millage.

Any idea on how much to freshen and engine on one of those?

A cheap NSX is like a cheap Porsche, Twice as much a good low mileage example.

You would be better off with the E36.

one thing i have noticed on the nsx, is how poorly it holds up over time - same with the rx7 - they seem to just fall apart - perhaps the owner - perhaps the build quality - not sure

something to think about on the e36, if you plan to sell it later - if the extremely clean special order fully loaded manual trans e46 ragtop we just traded in is any indicator, bmw used car values fall very fast - it was dropping about $4k a year

OT - I have to check the legal proviisons of being a member of this forum and see if we have been compelled not to sue eachother, because the seizures I'm experiencing from looking at the new smokiemon avatar may be grounds for some action here.. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/dry.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/wink.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/wink.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/laugh.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

Any NSX in remotely decent shape is at least low $30s and that's with high miles. Nice cars and I would be driving one if I wasn't over 6 feet tall, frigging midget car!!!
