PPI Trouble spots\Recommendations
#1

Hey everyone. Hopefully soon I'll have a 968 in the garage. I really miss my 944 (except for the maintenance). I was expecting to see a list at the top of this page about typical things to check for when doing a PPI on a 968. Since I didn't see one let the list begin! I'm taking it to a Porsche dealer so they should know some if not all places to check, but give me some things to add to their list. Car has 115k so pinion bearing should be fine and water pump timing belt have been done recently.

Thanks,

Mike

Mainly looking for a list of things I can ask the dealer to check that they may not typically look for. Thanks.

that's a good start

i would also get a leakdown test to determine the condition of the engine - be prepared, they will object to this, but it will tell you if you are headed for a valve job or worse any time soon

i would carefully inspect for leaks - they can quickly lead to multiple component failure, especially in the suspension

i would carefully examine the hardware (like the exhaust bolts) - east coast cars will generally show more corrosion - this will give you a fair indicator of the maintenance of the car, as well as how difficult it might be to break loose some of the stuff when it comes time

if it is a cab, operate the top up and down listening closely for any signs of binding or grinding - if it is a hardtop, do the same with the sunroof

if it is a hardtop, carefully inspect the rear hatch trim for breakage, and the glass at the hinge area for delamination

carefully look at tire wear - this will be a good indicator of suspension condition - cupping is a sign of shocks or struts needing replacement

I second Amchorman's suggestion on the cam tensioner check, especially on a car over 100k. Like the leak down test it will not be part of a standard dealership PPI.

You might ask about the dealer's experience with the 944/968 model line. They may have very little/none and just go off tech manual and general mechanical experience. If this is the case you might look into a Porsche specialty shop. The forum can help you with suggestions if you are not familiar with a good one in your area.

agreed about quizzing the shop - a quick test is quiz them on clutch job time estimates - a 944 will take 12 hours and the mechaninc will groan - a 968 will only take 4 - you'd be amazed at how many shops, including dealerships, don't know that

Great forum.

I am looking for a 968 coupe in New Zealand. Most of the cars are about 50-60,000 kms and imported from Japan. Right hand drive in this country.

Will get a Porcshe garage (not a dealer) to look at it and note the issues mentioned.
