Hadn't driven the 968 much recently(winter/weather).Fired it up(made kind of a squealing noise from up front).Popped open the hood to check things out and noticed (PS) level a little low(filled it back up) and went for a drive.When I pulled back in garage noticed a little pool of fluid on floor so I dropped it off at the shop and they said it needed new PS unit(600.00 parts and labor).Haven't picked it up yet(weather).Is this a common failure in these cars(92' with about 90,000 on OD).Running 225/50/16's up front(a little wider than stock).Don't know if that would contribute or just the fact(17 yr old vehicle).The only other part failure I have incurred in my 5 plus yrs of ownership has been alternater so it been relatively(mechicanical) pretty reliable.

The 944 series as a whole seems to go through steering racks. My 968 rack is still fine, but the rack on my 944S has been replaced.

I had a steering rack failure (I assume that's what you're describing) at about 120,000 miles. It took three tries before a replacement rack was installed that didn't leak - very frustrating. Purchase from a reputable rebuilder/source with a good warranty, and keep your fingers crossed.

Had the same thing happen (as described in the quote) a week and half ago when I went for a drive to Mt Baker. I had not driven the car for about three weeks. There was a whining noise coming from what seems to be the Power Steering Pump. It makes different noises as I crank it back and forth or step on the gas. After warming up the noise was gone. Drove the car again on Saturday and the same noises were present. Also went away after car warmed up.

Is my pump about to go or could it just be that the fluid level is low?

I had something similar - turns our the noise was cause by the low PS fluid level.



The leak itself was caused by the fact that the hoses were not clamped tight enough. Clamps were re-tightened and leak stopped - at least when it is warm, if the temp drops too low, there is a small drip that remains. I guess that there is some component that contracts too much with temperature, and that causes the connections to leak ...

Checked the fluid level and saw that it was low. Bought some fluid (surprised that ATF was the required fluid) and after topping it up the noises disappeared!

Careful not to overfill as these units can leak and cover itself in the fluid. This makes for a potential fire issue. It has now become something I check at the track on a regular basis after someone pointed it out to me.

PS hose on the Passenger Side beneath the reservoir is a known failure point. It may just need tightening or replacement of the hose.

Work just recently performed at Delta. Car is still there because of stalling problem. Starts and idles perfectly. As soon as you touch accelerator peddle it will no longer settle to an idle. If you take your foot off the gas peddle it dies. I've suggested idle control valve to Delta but they are hesitant to make the repair because the car is not throwing a code.



I will definitely try Tim if I don't get some satisfaction at Delta soon. The Tech working on the car (Brady) has been there a long time. He personally owns a 951 and is a good mechanic. I suspect shop manager is not allowing him the time necessary to work on my car.
