Anyone has rebuilt 968 steering rack before? Please give advice on tips.

Is it better off to just by a rebuilt unit? I heard the rebuilt rack could be a hit or miss thing.

If your in the states, get the rebuilt rack from Autozone, it's around $180 and has a lifetime warranty.

I had mine replaced last January by a Porsche shop (too busy myself). He said he wouldn't install the Autozone one, since I expected them to warranty the work. But he was OK with the rebuilt one from Zims $289.00 and would trust theirs. I recall some previous post here that indicated with someone's experience that the Autozone one failed, maybe twice. Autozone was good with the warranty and replaced for free but the person of course had to go through the work to replace it. At the shop I used for my replacement, they first offered a rebuilt one for $1,200 or something like that. I had to hunt around and find a lower cost source that they would accept.

Any rebuilt rack you get is a gamble. The rebuilt racks for our cars are the same ones back to the first 944 in the early 80's, so they have all been around for a while. There are wear points in the rack that if worn to far, new seals will not fully seal. Unfortunately these rack make it past all the rebuilders so sometimes you get a good one and sometimes not. I have used AutoZone and was happy with them, you use Atsco for rebuild, which are in Arizona. The good part is you just walk into AutoZone and say give me a new one if it fails. Replacing a rack really isn't that big of a job, it goes pretty quick after you get past your first one.

Ive rebuilt a couple. Its not real hard. Kinda tedious picking out all the seals, I use dental picks, and a pair of hemostats. Every time Ive bought a "rebuilt" one, its crap. Im sure there are good ones done right tho. I got fed up, after buying racks, installing them, pouring fluid into them, and it just immediately going onto my garage floor, as soon as I turned the wheel. 70 bucks gets you a reseal kit. http://www.rennbay.com/rack-944-power-stee...130c7d1bf4379e6

When you guys say "rebuilt," it sounds like you really mean "re-sealed," right? What if the actual rack and pinion gears are worn? No choice but to shell out for a new one at that point, I assume...

Yeah if the internals. are shot you better buy a new one. Or find a good core. I havent had this issue so far....knock on wood. Theyve both resealed, and doing just fine. Be about almost 3 years now. 5-10k miles, on the 951. My buddy has the other one, not sure mileage.

When I had a leak last year I took my rack of the car and had it resealed by a specialist company. This way I got my own rack back a couple of days later. These guys have a full setup in their shop to test for leaks and ensure that the rack is centered. I have had no issues with my resealed rack.
