Power Steering Fluid Recommendation?
#1

I need to add a little bit of "power steering fluid" to my reservoir. Manual says "ATF Dexron-II D" (1994 car). Have read that synthetics should not be used. What should I buy?

I use Pennzoil ATF with no probs. Says it is a replacemenmt for cars that previously used Dextron III.

Yes, used Dexron III as well, with great results. By that I mean, and I strongly recommend that you, and everybody else with a car with over 60,000 miles, flush out their old fluid by sucking it out of the bottom of the reservoir with either a turkey baster, or a hand siphon. Fill it back up with new fluid, start the car, turn the wheel to the left and right (don't let the wheel stay in the extreme positions for more than a moment) about ten times, turn off the engine, and then repeat the process about four times. This procedure eliminated a squeal I was hearing when turning the wheel to the extreme lock position. Flushing the fluid will greatly extend the life of your power steering pump. Good luck.

Yes I did the same or similar. My old fluid was so old it was black. Now looks really good.
I think this procedure is good preventative maintenance.

Yes, agreed. I did it to my whole fleet of vehicles.

Took your advice. Sucked out the old stuff, and it was very dark red. Got the new stuff in and followed your instructions. To celebrate, I went for a ride in the country with my wife on a cloudless night and 73F temps. It doesn't get any better than this...
