Power Steering Again
#1

So I blew out both seals on both ends of the rack after about 3 months, the rack is being replaced under warranty, but I of course have to start turning wrenches. I talked to the company that rebuilds them and he is thinking the pump is pushing out to much pressure. He talked to a few people in the shop and that was the concencous. He said they push out around 1500 to 1750psi, which he feels is to much for that car. Apparently they dropped the pressure on the later 928 and 911 pumps. He said he could build a pump with lower pressure, or I was thinking of a underdrive pully for the pump. The car lasted a year on the last rack it had.

Anybody run into this before? I know the PS in these cars is a real pain, I had to do two racks in my old 944.

Never heard of that before. Perhaps he uses some kind of inferior seals in the rack?

I'm kind of inclined to think it's plausible. The blowout occured after I had the wheel at full lock, so full pressure. Also the amount of racks I have gone thru and others have in the 944's and what not. There has to be a reason why all these are blowing out early. 1500 to 1750lbs seem like a lot of pressure for that system especially on a ligher car. The 928 is running with less pressure. He also said he usually sees those pressure numbers on bigger vehicles like 1 ton trucks.

I think I'm going to try throwing on a underdrive pulley on just the pump itself and see what it does. I have no idea how much it would drop the pressure though.

quite a bit - i have that on mine and much prefer the feel

however, i have the entire set, which also changes the other pulley - not sure how much it would change with just one

I know Anchorman had a terrible time getting a rack that would work, at least 3 replacements, I think.

Haven't heard recently so I assume his problem is fixed.

I just checked the shop manual and the rebuilders figures are correct, the manual calls for 1450 to 1740 lbs. That seems like a awfull lot of pressure.

I was thinking of just the pump pulley since I'm not all that interested in pulling the crank bolt off to replace the pulley. The picture of the new pump pulley shows a much larger pulley then stock.

yeah - the kit also includes a different size crank pulley that "splits the middle" on the final rate - not sure how just one would work

call pete - he carries them
