Possible Wheels on E-Bay Dymag 17"
#1

These wheels are currently on e-bay...

http://cgi.ebay.com/PORSCHE-911-964-993-94...=item2c517497e9

PORSCHE 911 964 993 944 928 DYMAG NEW RIMS WHEELS 924

Dymag Magnesium Supertouring rims for Porsche 993 non-turbo.
I have a total of 4 rims, 2 rears and 2 fronts. Fronts are 8" x 17" and the rears are 9" x 17" 56 mm offset DYMAG part # 's C1589A 2210A01 & C1589A 2211A01. Wheels weight 16 lbs rear, front weight 15lbs each.

I made an offer and have received a counter and wondering what the thoughts were as to magnesium and/or fitment... should I pull the trigger.

Thanks Sam

I like the way they look, but more importantly isn't 16 lbs only about half the weight of our stock wheels ?
If they're that light and their overall strength is not compromised in any way by that, all those lbs removed directly off the rotating mass may turn your car into a rocket.. if you can reach an acceptable price, I say go for it..

not hardly - the 993 cup wheels are under 21 rear and 19 front - still, quite a bit of savings though if the offsets work for you

you may need spacers for these though, which could easily offset that savings - 56mm is not horrible (i'd b e very surprised if that was the offset all around), but will sit inboard on the front - if, for example, you had to add 20mm spacers, you would add nearly 4lbs per wheel (correct me if i'm wrong dan), which negates most of your savings - 20mm is too large, but you get the idea - a large portion of the added weight will be the hardware, and not so much the aluminum

magnesium is a very light compound - unfortunately it is also somewhat brittle - it does not take impacts well - depending on how and where you drive, and how heavy the car is, it may or may not be worth the weight savings

lol - it does make for good bonfire material though

The offsets are stated as 56mm for front and rear - front the pretty much a match (4mm) for the 52mm of our 7 1/2 width rear would be off 9mm compared to the 47mm of the stock 17x9's. The magnesium part has me alittle leary....currently offered at $1600 shipped

They would go on my Daily driver....Sacramento so no salt or really bad roads...

52 and 47 are the offsets for the replicas of the C2Turbo - the real ones are different (can't remember the numbers though), as are the real 993Cup (55)

working with the 52 and 47 though, and given that the fronts of these are 8" wide, that would push the resultant outer edge out about 2mm and the inside edge would extend inward about 10mm - i would double check the clearance to the spring - with stock springs, i had only 3mm clearance with a 9" wide 18 on a 57mm offset - a 17" wheel would have less, as the tire and wheel are closer to the perch

the rear should not be a problem in fitment, but would sit inboard 9mm more

the big problem is if you add 10mm spacers on the rear, the studs won't be long enough, so you'll either need more spacer, and that means weight, or longer studs, and that means labor

hey good to know my 993 cups are not too heavy - I was under the impression they're close to 30 lbs.. whoo-hoo !

what, the spacers weigh nearly nothing ! oh, but...it's the damn steel bolts that will kill you
actually a little over 4 lbs per wheel. ( if the spacers are 10mm or more you'll need bolted ones .. you can
get away with 5 mm spacers without new bolts, but not much more than that )

My wheels are Magneseum and they are known to be very strong wheels. I have ROH wheels in 18" in 8/9. I think you will need that front sppacer, but they are nice wheels. Anybody got a pic of these on a car?

Not crazy about the style as they are rather plain for my taste. but I love the weight loss.WOW! thats light.

I recently went to 18s and I'm thinking of switching back. Id hate to sacrifice the look I now have with the twist but that nagging thought of loosing a step or 2 off the jump just wont go away.

Hey. You might not have much competition on the auction. Did you note what he category?

Collectibles > Transportation > Automobilia > Press Kits

A lot of people will miss this as they search

Ok, wanted to confirm offsets and they are actually 58mm front/rear - so a little help with the fronts but whats that do to the rear....

as to style I like the 5 point star look - what I really like are the Kinesis supercup (no longer avaibable) look or maybe some of the Fikse (but I hear they are shutting down) and want 17" not 18" - so those are hard to come by these days without paying $5k for them....

and yes the wieghts really caught my eye...

I think Im alone with my feelings on 5 start style rims. Pat (porsche dude) told me the great lengths he went through to get 5 star rims then paint them that slate gray color. Spent a good coin on them and was very pleased with them. I Know others that feel the same way. Just not me. I don't think there ugly, I just want a little more style in my wheels.

On the other hand I think most BBS wheels are too busy. So go figure.

i too am a fan of the simple 5 star design, primarily for practicality - i hate cleaning wheels - the simpler the better

that being said, i also don't like square edges, so finding a rim has been very hard - it has always been a compromise between strength and style, as well as size

i opted out of the fikse because there were too many cases of them breaking - the kinesis were too heavy - none of the cast rims came in the sizes i wanted (which was further complicated by diminishing tire choices)

i like the look of these, and the weights are attractive (though i tend to think they are really a couple of pounds heavier than indicated)

that being said, i would not choose these for a car i would drive fast or hard - a 120mph pothole will likely do a lot of very abrupt damage - the same would probably happen on a big bump or pothole in an 80mph hard turn - they will probably be fine for an average street car though

also realize that due to the more brittle nature of magnesium it metal fatigues faster than aluminum - for this reason there are age limits on magnesium rims in many race groups - so, the older they are, the lower the speeds and stresses required to cause them to fail
