Performance or prestige ?
#1

The 2014 Nissan GTR supposedly has a 2.7 second 0-60 time and a 5.1 second 0-100 time. And if you disable the limiter which cuts off your fuel at at a mild-mannered 200 mph, it will go 250 mph. ( let me just take a moment here to say : holy f-ng sh*t !! ) That's in the Bugatti Veyron SS league, but with this key difference : the GTR is less than 1/20 the cost of a Veyron. IMHO, they re both butt-ugly so the question is this : do you spend just under $ 100k or do you spend $ 2 Mil for an identical performance ? I suppose anyone with a discretionary $ 2 mil budget would not be caught dead driving a Nissan , probably no more so than one of us 968ers would be caught dead driving some " ricer car " that may outperform ours, yet it seems a 20X price difference would make any reasonable person think it over..

No ? Ok, maybe not..;-) :-)

Unlimited cash I might buy the Veyron, bit given there is no where to really drive our cars at a sweet 130, how are you going to find somewhere to take either the Nissan or the Veyron to it's limit? I don't think I would buy the Nissan as there are other cars that thrill me in the emotions more.

Probably neither. Not having had the pleasure of driving either, but reading reports of those that get to sample lots of machinery, neither is renown for making a deep emotional link to either your soul or testicles.

I would love the opportunity to find out if a Ferrari 458 or 911 GT3 has the ability to tingle your spine and nether regions, but it is seriously unlikely I would ever have the cash to find out.

If I had to choose, it would be the GTR, the Veyeron is just way too expensive.

Having a car that could always draw expletives out of you would have to be a good thing, wouldn't it?

Kind of an odd comparison. Neither car does much for me - the Nissan, while not exactly ugly in my opinion, is just kind of dull and generic looking - just kind of a plain Jane. The Veyron is just beyond ridiculous in every way.

If money were no object, here are the cars I'd be test driving: The new 911, in its various iterations, the C7 Corvette when it comes out, the Aston Martin Vantage, and maybe an Audi R8 (don't like it's looks very much, though). A fully restored supercharged 968 would be on the list as well. Any of these is plenty fast and exotic for me. In fact, given today's nonstop traffic congestion, a 7th Gen VW GTI or Subaru BRZ/Scion FRS would more than do the trick as well. I'd take the money saved vs. a Veyron and put it toward track time, and tires.

I would choose neither and opt for something with more pleasing aesthetics...R10 Spyder comes to mind. If you insist on a car that can go over 250 MPH then I would prefer the Koenigsegg CCX R Special Edition 4.8 V8 S .

There are a lot of nice looking super cars that come fairly close to the Veyron performance ( close enough for thenthrill of your life anyway ) and the majority of them still below 1/4 of the Bugatti's price tag, but tne reason I brought up the GTR as a near identical performance vehicle for comparison was because of the staggering 1/20 ! price difference . Actually, now that I think about it more the Viper Venom and tne Corvette ZR1 are not too far off those perfromance numbers either, and still at a small fraction of the Veyron's tag.

Cloud, you're right I was a bit unfair calling the GTR " ugly " , it is precisely as you described it ; dull and generic.

Craig' s comment on cars which tickle your soul and testicles made me laugh, but I can certainly relate ; I recently took a ride in a car

that's blistering quick and yet one of the least inspiring, dullest sensations I have ever experienced associated with phenomenal acceleration : Tesla model S . Yawwwwwn . And pity, because I also find the car's lines very appealing.

I would also like a McLaren F1 if cash was not a limiter. Especially for a N/A car. Wowsers.

i'm not interested in going that fast on the ground. i'm hard pressed to find anywhere i can go 150 let alone 250, and even then, i could care less about top speed. i find it boring and pointless. i prefer the connection and feel of a car, whether the smooth luxury of a cruiser, or the taught performance of a sports car. big bloated supercars don't even hit my radar. i could have a ferrari or something like that. i don't really want one, even though i muse about a 355 from time to time.

so, for me, none of those cars mentioned hold any fascination for me. i would instead get something older and more classic

Interesting points people are making about cars with "soul", character, or inspire passion and offer a lot of tactile feedback. So, here comes another list - of soulful cars. But I'd add that a "soulful" car still needs to be a competent car. An MGA or Spitfire may be brimming with character, but I don't think I'd want to drive one on anything resembling a regular basis. This stipulation kind of rules out a lot of the classics, and all muscle cars (at least for me)

- Any Ferrari

- The Cobra, either original, or any of the better kits, like the Factory Five

- The 968

- The Subaru BRZ/Scion FRS. Saw a red BRZ up close the other day - very, very sharp car. People are making supercharger kits for them already, too

- Honda S2000, especially one with ITB's

- Maybe the BMW Z8, although while beautiful, it's highly flawed. Maybe this this contributes to its character, though.

- Mazda RX7 Twin Turbo. Saw one the other day - brought back a lot of nice memories of the one I used to own. I think their looks have held up well.

- A Euro Spec E36 M3 (if you can get one federalized)

Interested to see peoples' favorites.

Funny, as I think back over the cars I have owned, the one I enjoyed the most and felt the most connected to was my 1979 Celica Supra.

The GTR is a truely awesome bit of kit. But 250mph from 600bhp? <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/icon_lol1.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

This is a good example of why you shouldnt believe everything you read on the internet

the truly interesting thing is that my likes and dislikes have changed over the years. i used to only be interested in raw performance. it didn't matter to me how the car rode. now, i look for more refinement. i often long for another MGB (this time a supercharged 2 liter with AC) but then i think back on what it would be like to drive it, and my back hurts.

i can't really think of a car i would enjoy driving more than the 968, the way i have it set up now. it really doesn't matter about budget either. i could probably "justify" at least $150k for a car. but what would i get that would make me happier?

Yup - a well set up 968 is hard to beat for just plain overall excellence with a lot of character and exclusivity thrown in.

and it can carry 2 sets of golf clubs, 2 cases of wine, a weekend of luggage and the wife (yes, even the cab can do it)

So the conclusion is that the 968 is a better overall car than either of the two "supercars" that are the subject of this thread?

Only 200 HP, but for me my former E30 M3 had more of that special 'just right' feeling than all the other cars I've owned. Another one I should have never let go - now I can't afford one!

I'll let you know how the 968 compares if I ever get it working right!

We, of course, are a bit biased to the 968 in this crowd...

I'd have to agree though. I still really like the 944 variants after having 5 of them.

Others I'd like to own:

1. I still like the 996 turbo or GT3, but I think if one of my cars had to go it would be this one. I'm contemplating it right now. Deployments make one think funny things, and you can't just go jump in the car. It puts a smile on my face whenever I put my foot in it, and sticks like peanut butter to the roof of your mouth.

2. Ferrari 458 or the 355. Not a fan of the look of the 360 etc.

3. Current version of the Corvette Z06 or 427

4. Aston Martin Vantage

5. Audi R8 or R10

6. Boxster Spyder or Cayman R

7. Lotus Evora or Exige

8. Restomod 69 Camaro or 66 Mustang fastback

I think we all can agree none of these choices are practical primary cars. I'm pretty sure I could live with just about any M3 variant on a daily basis. I loved my 1991 M3, but I think I'd choose an E36 over that.

I was thinking about the E30 M3 - definitely a car that I'm sure gives a lot of feedback.

lol - i have driven every version M3 out there. i couldn't stand any of them. they were all fine cars, with lots of features and bang for the buck, but they were all mushy and vague. the steering was soft, the shifter sloppy, and the clutch feel almost non-existent. i got no input to speak of, and certainly no thrill. as a commuter they were all too bouncy and high-strung, and as a performance car they fell short. very much a sedan on steroids. a true case of compromise.

How about the AC 378 GT Zagato ? IMHO, one of the most beautiful cars ever, a 50/50 weight distribution so ostensibly great handling, and the bonus: a Chevy engine ( 6.2 L V-8 ) so probably easy to maintain and plenty of available, relatively inexpensive parts. Around $ 150 k , which is not a bad price tag for a car that looks as if should cost $ 500 k +. Next time I'm in Sta Monica ( the AC west coast dealer venue ) I think I'll check it out .
