The Mistress of Temptation
#21

Every year I keep offering our local Ford dealer $ 75k for the GT which has been sitting in their showroom for ages and evidently not selling at the asking $ 250k price, but they still refuse to consider anything below that figure. That is definitely one the cars for which I would readily give up the 968 in trade ( trade in + $ 25 k :-) :-) )

Cars to me seem like mechanical porn, or the mechanical equivalent of women. There are lots of "average" or below average cars out there, then there are to ones you could have just to look at, admire, and wonder at. Some age gracefully and/or even acquire more beauty as they age and the young/modern generation all become tatoo'd up or me too in their looks.

Cars normally don't argue with you. Perhaps I am seeing a car as the initial step ford wife, if only they could cook and do the housework.

Ok, an attempt to be somewhat fair to the question -- must be about the same price.

- MB 280SL

- BMW 3.0 CSi (E9)

Ok .. fine... they've both doubled in value since I bought the 968, would be difficult to trade even.

However, IMHO these 2 cars ... perhaps ... represent one of the few peaks of automotive design. (with honorable mention to the Jaguar E-Type)

1. I think it would be a toss-up between a 944 S2 or an older Boxster if I couldn't find a 968.

2. Caymen R

3. Ferrari 250 Lusso Berlinetta

How about the all-but-forgotten Acura NSX? I'm not wild about the looks, but for its day, the car was a very advanced design, had incredible handling, and was a reliable, livable mid-engined exotic. Not sure what they're worth nowadays, but I would imagine with some searching, one could be had in the $20K range.

Also, another car that isn't apersonal favorite of mine, but any number of 928's could also me had for around $20K. Also a Lotus Esprit, I would think. I've also always liked the Honda S2000 (one with a set of ITB's would be a real screamer), and an early Lotus Exige could also be had in the low $20's, I'm sure. Then there's the Toyota MR2 - for $20K, one could build a Turbo that's a real rocket.

I'm not trying to diss the 968 - to the contrary, the fact that it holds up well against a list of pretty decent cars speaks very well for it.

within the budget listed, i'm not sure i could get anything that does what the 968 does. even with unlimited budget (i've spent over $160k on the blue car) i can't think of much that does what the 968 does. i've considered just about everything, and given how much i've spent, could have had just about anything.

it had to be:

sporty

under 3500lbs

convertible

2 seat

manual trans

front engine

rear drive

AC, power steering, power brakes, yada yada

decent sound system

it had to be able to carry:

2 sets of golf clubs

2 cases of wine

weekend of luggage

wife

there wasn't much to choose from. there still isn't

Against the list of criteria Flash lists, there really isn't much else that works, which again speaks to the versatility and overall excellence of the 968. About the only other cars that I can think of that meet these criteria are the C5 or C6 Corvette (very much a matter or personal preference), the 951 convertible, possibly the S2000 (not sure about the trunk space, though). I agree that a supercharged 968 is probably the most desirable overall choice.

vette and S2000 both incapable of carrying the golf clubs. i looked seriously at both cars. besides the aforementioned failings, i can't wear belt buckles big enough to have the vette, and politically incorrect or not, i'm just too white and too old for an S2000

lol.

I'm surprised the Vette won't carry a set of gold clubs. I thought they had huge trunks.

nope - the huge trunk in the vette belongs to the woman in the passenger seat.

seriously though. the hardtop version has a decent trunk, but the convertible doesn't
