The Mistress of Temptation

Ok, many members are expressing their inner frustrations and thoughts about straying from either a long term or short term relationship with their 968. Not sure if this is a seven year itch (or a multiple thereof) or just a desire for something younger in their life, but a problem shared is a problem solved.



So for those of you out there who are (and even those who are not), if you were to decide to end your relationship/love affair (for some members) with your 968, and be tempted to part ways, can you nominate;



1. What it is that you would buy to replace the 968 using the funds from the sale (car, other toy, etc) - but must only be from the proceeds of the sale eg: cannot be more expensive)

2. If funds were not an option, what would tempt you to give up the 968 (this means you must get rid of the 968 to have it, as per your wife's/significant others direction).

3. What you would try to have in addition to the 968 and does it become your wife/mistress/art form (ie: you drive it more than the 968/ you drive it instead of the 968 when you can/ you simply have it to look at and drool over).



Would be interested to know people's thoughts.

No temptation here. If I ever get my @$%*&&Q*!R(Q!#%&$*)@ steering rack back on my car, and confirm that the power assist now works, I will be keeping this car a loooong time. After this much work, there's no way I could get rid of it any time soon.



I'm really glad to hear you're so high on the 968 as a track car. On paper, it just doesn't look that fast, so I'm always worried that at the end of this massive project, I'll have a mediocre car, but it sounds like there is hope.

Today, after the local Porsche Club Arrive & Drive, I drove a little further and looked at an '88 944 Turbo (fairly sure it is an S model). It is a one owner car in really great shape for it's age; great interior, carpets, and good condition all leather interior (front and rear seats) and paint in pretty good condition. I'm tempted by the ease of getting 300+ HP with a 951, which is what I was used to with my supercharged Probe/Mazda. And, it wouldn't cost me as much as I could sell the 968 for, even after any extra $'s spent on replacing a variety of hoses/plastic items under the hood. And, after 25 years and the added heat of the turbo, I could see that there was a lot that I'd eventually be replacing.



So, I don't think I will take the plunge. I sure like the ease of working on the 968. One attractive feature of the 968 is that it doesn't have a ton of things stuffed under the hood. My Probe/Mazda being a V6, supercharged, and front wheel drive was jam packed up front. The 944T reminds me too much of what I was trying to get away from. So, think I will stick with the 968. Even if I were to install an S/C to get to my 300+, it should still have a lot less to deal with than a 951.

No temptation whatsoever. However, in response to the questions :



1. Simply not possible to buy anything even remotely close that I would enjoy, with the limited proceeds from the sale.

2. Probably a number of Ferraris ( Maranello 550 , F 430 , 599 Fiorano, 355 perhaps )

3 Same as above.



Note : my favorite car of all time is the DB9. However I can say that driving it did not give me the same " one with the car " sensation that I get with the 968. It had no soul. For that matter even the 550 which I test drove , though more thrilling than tne 968 in many respects, still had something missing..not sure what exactly, maybe handling , but just not as complete as the 968.



So sometimes those mistress are alluring but after testing them you might still long after the sensation you get with your life long love :-)

I have access to a 1955 four door Chevy station wagon that I would buy if I ever sold the 968. In fact, but the time I get the Porsche streetable, I could have bought the Chevy.

That being said, I plan on keeping the 968 for a while as it owes me some fun for all the $$$ I have spent on it. Who knows, if the right offer comes in, I might take the money and run. lol

An Austin Healy would be nice. There was one just north of here a couple years ago - frame off restoration$125K.

A bug eyed sprite would be cool, but I can't fit in it. I can bearly get into the 968.

as beautiful and historic as the shelby is, having driven a couple of them, as well as a number of other mustangs of that era, in all sorts of setups, i would not want to own one at my age. i have gotten way too used to solid cars. that's exactly why i have not done another british sports car either. the twisty, rattly tendencies of cars of that era would make be nuts today.



nostalgia versus reality i think.



that's what makes the 968 such a perfect car for me now. it is an older car, so i am not stuck dealing with the over-computerized and air-bagged cars of today, but still it is solid and modern enough to not make me crazy.

When it really comes down to it, if I am honest with myself, I enjoy owning cars, I really don't enjoy working on them (I don't even like detailing them). I am getting too old to be crawling around and under autos. I do other things that can give me a sense of accomplishment, ie...my photography is one example. As limited as the experience was of having the center console out to try to find out why the front speakers are not working, nothing was solved and the frustration is still there. I have to say I really did not enjoy the process. When my parts come from Flash, I will probably have someone else put them on.



I have my 1979 Suzuki GS1000L torn apart in the garage. I have the parts to replace the throttle cable, and the K&N filters to replace the airbox since I can't get the rubber tubes to break loose, and then I have to take the float bowls off the carb and clean them and put it back together from the stupid ethanol gas. It has been sitting half torn apart for over a year. I should have just taken it to the Suzuki dealer long ago.



I see myself as a driver not a mechanic. It was cool when I was 20. Not so anymore for me. That being said, I do have much respect for you guys that can take it apart and remember where everything goes 6 months later. I can't remember what I didn't have for breakfast this morning.

For what you can get an almost perfect 968, there isn't anything else out there new or used... That said, I would have probably got ridden of my 968 over my Lotus Esprit, if the Lotus was as reliable as the 968. In the 11 years of ownership of my current 968 has never left me stranded or gave me fits. Same goes for the 2 other 968 before this one...

While I like the 968 a lot, just for argument's sake, assuming a $20K price tag (the accepted average cost of a good 968, whether purchased restored, or fixed up by the owner), there's:



1. Mazda RX7 twin turbo

2. Any number of Corvettes

3. Toyota Supra Turbo (OK, not too much in the looks department, I realize)

4. Factory Five Cobra kit

5. A very nice E36 M3

6. An E46 M3 with some miles

7. A very nice 350Z

8. Very soon, a Subaru BRZ/Scion FSR owned by someone who's grown tired of the "sports car ride."

9. An older Boxster with a few miles

10. Maybe an older Cayman

11. The aforementioned 951



I'm sure there are many more, but I've got to get back to my steering rack install, the result of which will determine the future of my life as I know it...

Seeing as though I started this, I better now put my 20 cents in.



1. Nothing comes to mind

2. Same as above, as nothing comes close for the dollars.

3. Lots of other cars, as I would like to be like Jay Leno or Seinfeld, but lack their cash. Holden, through HSV have just released a new GTS, which has a 430kW supercharged Chev V8 in it. That would be a hooligan special. Rear tyres might not last long. Same for any of the AMG 63 cars, the V8 in those sounds awesome, a 911 GT3 RS even if just to look at and polish, a 1973 RS replica that I could drive (as it is too old to be wanky), any Ducati Superbike, a Lotus Espirit V8 would be cool to own, but I doubt I could get in and/or out, a Shelby Cobra replica, a 917 replica (same issue as the Lotus), a GT40 replica (ditto), etc. even a De Tomaso Pantera GTS would be cool, a Lamborghini Mirua and Ferrari Dino (would even consider a 458). Note, none of these cars I have ever sat it, let alone driven, so the first dance if the opportunity came up might be the last.

and then something weird like an AMC Gremlin or Marlin fastback and totally the AMX

The title of this thread reminded me of a famous line : " I have the willpower to resist anything...except temptation " :-)

There was a nice, white (one of my favorite sports car colors) 911 GT3 RS at the PCA arrive & drive yesterday. I even enjoyed it when he blew by me in a passing zone on one of the open stretches. Be fun to have, at least as a track toy.



I've always been a GT40 fan as someone above mentioned. Could come from the fact that I was there when they were the hot car on the racetrack. Think they'd be a hoot to do DE days with. Always loved the sound and torque of a big V8.
