Performance Chip Installation

So I received the Performance Chip with lots of decals. It must be so obvious to install that it came without directions.



I laid it on the seat and drove around with no noticeable improvement.



I found a forked stick and walked around the car citing incantations hope the stick would point it out.



I then thought I would ask forum members....



Where is the chip located? Inquiring minds want to know.

Thanks, I emailed Chip and he immediately responded with the directions.



About an hour to install with the following observations.



It says to remove the 3 screws that hold in the computer. On my '94 Cab, they are secured with cap nuts in the back. Be careful to make sure they do not drop off behind the bracket. Also, in my situation, the three screws have a second "piggy backed" bracket with some relays on it. So, the three screws actually hold in two brackets.



Be advised, replacing the screws while threading through two brackets will qualify you for saint hood. I used a small vice grip to hold one side while I got the other one aligned and secure.



It runs like a champ and the shifting is much more agressive! Best money I have spent on it so far.

yes, screws with cap nuts on the back - since the entire plate assembly should be in your hand, so it shouldn't be much of an issue - it sounds like you tried to do it without removing the larger plate assembly - that is definitely the hard way

Reviving another old one.



Been doing my research on the performance chip. Flash likes RSB, others seem to like racer-X. Looks like either would be a good choice. I see a lot of posts about 'learning' ECUs and blowing smoke and pinging with the chips. And something about not worrying about red line. A few questions.



1) Does the chip allow you to blow past red line? I am assuming of course that the 968 has a rev limiter. I rarely hit it in my DD but every once in a while when I am really shooting a gap (always simply attempting to stay out of someone's way or improve traffic flow of course) I'll bang off the top. I'd hate to blow up the 968 - there are so few out there and they are sooooo expensive to fix.



2) Pinging, Smoke, and Learning. Saw one post that said the technology in these chips are simple maps and don't include the logic to learn. Seems reasonable to me - fact or fiction? So assuming that the ECU is not able to learn, what are the trade offs in durability that we are making with the chip? I can only get 91 Octane and it just hit $4.75 a gallon in my neck of the woods - gag. Will the timing be so changed that she'll ping on hard acceleration?



3) Location, location, location. No I am not looking to buy ocean front in AZ gryph, but I read the DIY and it suggested that you need to p-u-l-l-t-h-e-c-a-r-p-e-t to get at the box..... Following xrads xploits with his resto I absolutely shudder at the thought of pulling that crap off the deck. Since so many have done this I am hoping that this was a simple mistatement in the DIY or that there is a magic section of carpet that you can pull off without a blowtorch.

nope - simple yank of some velcro there - very easy



as for my preferences, i used to prefer the racer-x - then the rsb chip came out and i tested it against the racer-x - now i run the rsb



makes sense if you stop to think about it - the newest chip is likely to be the best - why would somebody bother to put out a chip that does less than what is already out there?



rsb chip raises rev limit to about 7400 - racer-x is clear to 7800



p.s. - there is talk about a new chip on wronglist, but it is really a very old chip, has problems, and is not ready for the american market - but we won't get wrapped up in that drama here

By the way Rxter...powerband dies off significantly above 6,700...anything beyond that and you should be in another gear...my understanding is that the rev limit is for "over-rev" situations.

I have the Racer-X chip - installed before the RSB chip existed, and I don't think there's enough difference to warrant the switch (comments invited!). I've been up to about 7,500 rpm with no problem or limit - didn't realize that the chip limits at 7,800 rpm - which, as pointed out, is not worth going to, you should shift well before that.

rxter: the carpet came out most easily in the front right passenger footwell....... No glue to plywood which cover the brains of the car. Nice 60,000$ and you get a plywood footrest...but it was really nice plywood...



I had an aftermarket chip, but restored computer back to original chip. Car actually ran better in my opinion.

My DD is the 04 RX8. That thing has no guts until 4K, and then zings to 9K without even thinking about it. It yells at you at 8.5 and then cuts the fuel flow at 9. But it is made to do that which is why I am not overly cautious. The 968 provides me with plenty -o- juice below 6500. But I do like the idea of a rev limiter to keep it from blowing up in a really odd ball situation.



Thanks for the info so far. What about the pinging? Any problems with that?

It will probably throw the CEL like the other Euro chips do but we don't know that the chip has "problems". I expect the chip to be like several of the chips that give the car a nice boost in performance. We won't know about things like A/F ratios until someone does a dyno trip. Will I be switching? No, my chip from RSB is designed for the mods I have so I seriously doubt it would give me the same let alone better performance.



Calling Rennlist "wronglist" is dropping to the level of people who call 968Forums the "junior forums".

actually, we do know it has problems - they have even said so themselves - dig a little deeper - also the hooey about tip compromises is just marketing hype - plenty of people have been in that software since that chip was developed years ago, and poking around looking for more power - they have found nothing compromising about the tip code



as for dropping to anyone's level, i agree, but it certainly is appropriate commentary these days - talk about polarized and biased - with threats of physical violence being bandied about (more than once), vendors being banned because they aren't sponsors (even though they were very careful never to push their products on that site) and threats of banning people just because they support a vendor that is not a sponsor, it's clearly not the place to be - those same people claim bias here, because a vendor is a part owner of the site, hide under an alias, yet claim not to come here, and continue to support another site which has a sole owner who is a vendor, and has stated clearly that he will not tolerate any interference with the business - double standard?



for the record, all of the owners of this site welcome all points of view, all vendors, and support the development of any new product - in fact, if one comes out that works well, i would not be surprised if rs barn would like to market it - certainly they welcome somebody else doing the testing, rather than having to again do things like , commission the development, provide the car on which to do it, and then pay for the extensive testing, as they had to do with the header, only to have people with an axe to grind go around telling people that they are just a reseller of that product



i, like you, have likely way too many mods for anything other than the chip designed for my car to perform best, but i have always said that if one came out that was better, i would run that, regardless of who made it - i want the best products for my car - period - i don't care where they come from, as long as they work



it's much easier to carry somebody else's product than to develop one yourself - i can attest to that, and would not have gotten into development at all if somebody else would do the work and test things thoroughly



so much drama - all i wanted 5 years ago was a chip for my car - i need a beer now

there should be no pinging if your knock sensors are in order, and you are running the correct fuel octane level

I just added the RS Barn header...so the new chip likely wouldn't work with my mods either. To me, the ablity to add modifications through one source makes the most sense since I know that everything has been tested together.



I've seen too many ricers with bolt on parts from multiple vendors that run like sh&t...I'm not about to do that to the 968.



btw, the headers is a Rush! Car has some real growl, and the wife was even giddy in the passenger seat...I love the sound driving through a tunnel...and even more getting pinned to the seat <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/laugh.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/laugh.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

Flash,

After a bad second position knock sensor was replaced I have started to get a "knock", not a "ping" when under load.

My PM says that if I am getting air leaking into the engine thru vacuum hoses or intake manifold leaks, the sensors would not pick it up and adjust by adding more fuel, as they are ahead of the leak. I have switched to Cheveron premium fuel and even added max104 for octane boost. It seems to have improved a bit, but it is still there some of the time.



My PM thinks that it may all be related to a "hunting" issue at idle. He thinks that if the injectors are dripping instead of spraying the DMA will keep adjusting for the rich condition at idle and then go back to normal mixture until it looks again and readjusts, which would cause the idle to move up and down.



I have done the blink tests and found no faults.

I have checked all of the vacuum lines and they look ok.

I have notices an oil-like fine film deposited on the block around some of the intake ports that I have not seen before.



Any ideas from the forum before I take the car in for the injectors to be pulled and reconditioned?

vacuum gauge?



other than that, he could be right - they are likely overdue for cleaning anyway - mine were, at only 35k - varnish is a drag



the upside is that i not only had them cleaned, but balanced as well - much better performance

Do this carefully! Possable fire hazard



With the engine running spray carb cleaner around all the places that could have a leak, stay away from real openings like the MAF and HOT stuff. If/when you spray a leaking area the engine will either idle faster or stumble depending on the cleaner.
