Introducing the new Design 1 Racing Short Shift kit
#21

<!--quoteo(post=74662:date=Jun 27 2009, 11:01 PM:name=ds968)-->QUOTE (ds968 @ Jun 27 2009, 11:01 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}><!--quotec-->I just installed it this afternoon and took the car out for a spin. I can say this: there should be no one driving their 968 without this mod ! The difference is night and day and it feels like a completely different car - a sports car ! Tight but not notchy at all ( which is one thing I had
concerns about before getting it ), significantly shorter throw, goes perfectly into each gear seamlessly and feels so right it's tough to articulate
how much more enjoyable it is to drive the car with it. Wow. Remarkable !

So glad you're enjoying it. I seem to remember some puzzlement on your part awhile back about the benefit of a short shift kit. I've only driven one stock 968 prior to buying mine (which came with a rear-mounted kit), and to say I was horrified at the unbelievably long, sloppy throws of the stock shifter would be an understatement. As DS says, if you haven't upgraded to a short shift kit (and from the reviews, the Design 1 kit is clearly superior to the earlier kits), you have no idea what you're missing. This has to be in the top five mods for a 968.

the part that makes me happiest about dan's install, apart from the obvious pleasure from him enjoying the results, was that he did the install himself - he is definitely not a mechanic - let's just say that i have been threatening to engrave "lefty loosey - righty tighty" on his tools - lol

i'm very happy with the results though, and the responses that this kit has brought about have been great - thanks guys

Clown !

But he's right; on this car my only DIY-s have been replacing the starter, this shifter, a supervised DYI taking out the steering wheel and the instrument panel, and the catback, and that's about it..
Oh, yeah I also bored out the cyls to 3.2 and replaced the pistons, but that was on a Labor Day weekend so I had plenty of time..

Oddly enough I used to do quite a bit of work in the 70s on my 'Cuda, and on the Chevy and on the Olds, but did not touch the Fiat or the Maserati so it must be a foreign car phobia

I digress... so back on track: I love this shifter mod.

Sigh, I feel so inadequate with a Tiptronic. But at least I will not be accused of having a short shifter.

I did this today. I have one statement and one question. Very good kit with very positive result (that's the statement). Why didn't Porsche make 'em like this to begin with? I cannot see one single benefit from having long throws (save for perhaps...uhh...no that's not it...uhh...no, can't think of any).

thanks - always love to hear stuff like that

not sure why they didn't do it - seemed simple enough to me - as you could see, i followed their design, and merely changed the geometry - not sure what they were thinking

the only thing i can think of is that a larger pattern generally means you know what gear you are in more easily - the smaller pattern means you have to pay attention - somebody who is "less sporty" might not always know where they are - admittedly, when not paying attention, i've missed shifts into third before and ended up in 5th

anyway, glad it works for everybody - i have it and the rear kit in mine now - talk about tiny pattern - been thinking about a shift gate plate underneath to alleviate mis-shifts

i believe there was a 968 tequipement short shift kit available, but has been long out of production and NLA. Someone correct me, if this is misinformation.

i just wanted to clear up some misinformation being bandied about on that "other site" (it sure is becoming a place for wrong information lately - whatever - moving on).

this shift kit is NOT a modified OEM shifter. it is completely new, made from scratch. it resembles the OEM shifter closely because i did not want to introduce new problems, and only wanted to reduce the shift pattern. i replicated the design, but changed the pin location, and shortened the shaft. this resulted in a nice pattern reduction, without having to replace your knob with an aftermarket knob, and without any other fitment complications.

the washers are included for fine tuning the geometry, as each car is a bit different, and so as to provide the maximum shift pattern reduction, the washers are used in a car by car basis to accomplish that. some cars will only work without the washers. others will be able to use them. you have to fit it to know what your car will take. because the envelope is getting pushed a bit, it is very important to fit it properly to ensure fluid operation and no interferences.

once installed properly though, i have not had any complaints.

but don't take my word for it. there are over 100 people out there now with this shifter. ask them what they think.

I like mine. Was a bit stiff shifting for the first few weeks, but soon loosened up. No complaints and I've had it for at least 2 years.

yeah - that's pretty much what i hear from everybody. gotta love that.

it never ceases to amaze me how some of the "internet experts" spout off on stuff they know nothing about. "i've never seen it, or used it, but it must be crap." fortunately it's pretty easy to identify those clowns, and even easier to figure out their motivations. it's also fortunate that they hang out in one place, and it isn't here.

but, it's not hard to find real information. once you find your way here, it's easy to find out the real story on pretty much anything.
