raced an Audi RS6 today
#1

Audi RS 6 - another car, which ON PAPER, should not have a problem outrunning the 968 in a straight line... well, that's exactly what didn't happen: for more than a mile, hardly any traffic and flat out acceleration from about 20 mph up to around 130-ish he could not close the 1/2 car gap I had ahead on him in the adjacent lane...nor could I pull away from him. Regretfully we both had to end the tete-a-tete as enough traffic was staring to show up ahead to make continuance ill-advised, at that speed.

Just reporting the facts, folks..

Not sure if I should be pleased or disappointed with the results. Based on hp/weight ratio that car should have had a decent edge, so I'm pleased with the outcome <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/smile.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> , but then having a gosh darned family sedan stay neck in neck with me is nothing to gloat about <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/dry.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

Not to bang on our 968's but the Rs6 posts 0-60 times under 5sec. and 1\4 mile under 13sec.

I don't see how a N\A 968 could hang at any speed before the Audi cuts out @ 155mph of course. Especially since the Audi driver only has to master how to smash the gas pedal to the floor, and we have to shift.

Anywho there both great cars.

Cheers

Not sure I have the answer to all of it either, but I as for the 0-60 and 1/4 mi times, I have stopped believing in PUBLISHED stats long time ago. Often in real life the results can vary by as much as 25% from the various figures put out by the manufacturer or car magazines tests. The 968 for one has had published 0-60 times from 5.6 all the way to 6.7 and everything in between ( for the same model - 6speed coupe ) Also, who knows how well his Audi was tuned ?!

Mine is in top notch shape. And while it is N/A , the chip, air box mods, BB exhaust , and let's not forget the skill of the driver <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/wink.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/rolleyes.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/tongue.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> could have contributed to the draw here..

Not too far from the category of this RS6 was an M5 I had the unfortunate idea to race a couple of years ago.. and that was humiliating ! He could have been towing a 747 and still pulled away from me with ease..

I agree with you %100 on the published spec thing it's ridiculous with all of the varying numbers. I think if I remember you're in the bay area. I'm down there a lot and I'd love to hear the exhaust on you're car.

Hmm Audi A6.

About a year ago I was in Germany on my monthly trip to Denmark, there is this bridge high over a canal (Nord-Ostsee-Kanal) and there's this speed limit of 80 km (50mi).

As I'm a nice guy and I know German police is devoid of humor I move over to the slow lane between the trucks. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/cool.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

Once over the bridge and in sight of the 'End of Limit' sign I check my mirror and started to overtake.

From there on it is some 60 km of free Autobahn to the Danish border so I went flat out. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/biggrin.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

I'm just about to shift from 3rd. to 4th. gear when this Audi A6 pulls out in front of me, I really have to brake hard and say a few choice words. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/mad.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

Seconds later a red sign lights up inside the car, POLICE FOLLOW US. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/sad.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

What did I do wrong? I did not break the speed limit, I did not overtake recklessly, what is it? <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/mellow.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

About 2 km further at the next exit he turns off and stops on the shoulder.

While I park right behind him (the European way) I notice a nice looking sports Mercedes closing me in from behind., nowhere to go... <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/unsure.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

A gentleman comes out of the Audi and introduces himself as Police and pointing at the Merc he says 'Customs .

OK.

Now the four of them do a detailed check of my car, knock everywhere and are talking about getting 'The Dog'.

In the mean time my details have been put into the computer and apparently I show up clean, some more discussion if they need the dog, no.

Obviously they were looking for drugs, a week earlier Danish police caught a Dutchman with like 450 kg of Mariuana in his car and now they wanted to have a similar spectacular bust.

They figured a black Porsche would be their ticket to fame. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/mellow.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

Anyway, the search was over and now they were curious what type of car this is (mine does not have the 968 on the back). <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/cool.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

Why?

Well the Merc was going to stop me but because he, to his surprise, found he could not keep up he radioed the unmarked Police patrol ahead to block me off.

The Policeman then excused for having done it in such a rude way but I was coming up so fast it was their only chance. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/tongue.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

So we talked a little more about 968 and parted with a smile and a wave.

Yes German Police A6's are unrestricted.

Sorry, but an Audi RS6 with a live human behind the wheel fully depressing the accelerator pedal will annihilate a 968. This is not even a close race. Maybe it was an A6 2.7T or a 4.2. If not, the car had problems or the driver was not trying.

Not trying to push any buttons but having a great deal of experience with the RS6 (and Audis in general) and daily driving a 968, I am very familiar with these cars capabilities.

Brett, he said the Mercedes was the one that couldn't keep up, the Audi was the one to cut him off.

No, no mistaking the Audi - it was an RS6. Have no idea if the car had problems. As for the driver not trying... perhaps, but I tend to doubt that he'd push the car to 130mph + just to keep pace with me and not willing to pass ( if he could have easily done so ) .. what would be the point ?

He said the A6 pulled out in front of him. Was that as in : Overtook him and pulled out in front ? Or was the A6 already ahead and pulled out in front of the

968, then slowing down so Dirk had to break ?

Dirk ?! Inquiring minds want to know <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/blink.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/cool.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

OK, but the fact of the matter is an Audi RS6 is a much, MUCH faster vehicle than a 968. So guys, unless you have a turbo under the hood don't go out racing for pink slips against these things <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/smile.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />.

I agree, this does not make any sense at all so I am as puzzled as anyone else would be... may be he wasn't trying to do anything else but drive fast behind me so I'm the one that gets the speeding ticket ...

I've done that at times <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/rolleyes.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/cool.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

and hey, I would not recommend racing for pink slips even against a Yugo <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/tongue.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> - you never know what someone has under the hood.

No the Audi was in the slow lane, a few cars ahead of me.

It was indeed the Merc (Customs) that could not keep up, the Audi (Police) just came out in front of me to block my way.

(No, it was not an RS but an A6, it was just the mentioning of an Audi model 6 that triggered my memory)

A pity, I would have liked to see an undercover Police RS <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/smile.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />
