Original 16" wheels
#1

I'd like to get rid of my 16" wheels. Any thoughts on what they're worth? Is it worth having them refinished, or should I just leave them for the next person. They are "ok" with some road rash, etc.

I believe there may be greater interest from folks who track or autoX their cars where 16s are preferred to 17s, so I’d think there is no point spending a lot of money refurbishing them, considering what they will be used for ( probably ) .   That’s considering that 17s were a factory option, so anyone who wants to keep the car fully original, for shows or whatever other reason, can stay with, or get 17s,  no need to look for 16s.   IMO .

I’m not sure where you heard 16’s are preferred for the track. I’ve not run across 968ers using them unless they are new to the track and have yet to upgrade.

Lighter, faster, more maneuverable.  My local friend ( and former forums member ) who was an avid autocross and track competitor, used both the 17s and the 16s,  and said the times were consistently better with the 16s .   He raced all three 968s he owned, and also the GT3 he had, with different size wheels.  Same assertion made by another friend  ( who is my 968 mechanic ) who tracks 968s, as well as Miatas lol.  Says it’s simple physics .

I could see the 16's being better for Autocross because of the fast transitions required and the added sidewall cushion and flex. I would not see them as being an advantage on a track. Just like how anti-roll bars are sometimes a detriment for autocross but an absolute necessity for track racing. I suppose it really depends on the track, the car, and the tire compound, and the driving style.

As for the wheels, remember, they are also desirable for late 944 owners who want to update the look of the car, so they will have value to someone.
