Odometer Gears
#1

As some of you know, I designed a replacement odometer gear for our troublesome odometers. If your odometer and trip meter don't work this is most likely the culprit. I have actually been surprised at the number of people that have contacted me for a new gear. I haven't posted about this in awhile so I thought I would let people know in case someone is in need of one. I just finished a new batch so now seemed like a good time.

My replacement gear versus a busted unit from my car:

I am sending them out for $10 (material cost, to cover my time and give my wife a small excuse for not hounding me on spending time doing these sorts of things.) Email or PM me if you need one.

I've never had the problem (yet).

But reading how many have suffered this failure I'm sure you are doing some really good work here!

Just out of curiosity, is it machined or made in a die?

Neither actually. I am making the gears on a stereolithography machine. 3D Systems - Stereolithography

Thanks Brett, the one you sent me fit perfectly. What a joy to fix something on the 968 without spending a fortune.

Keep up the good work!

Flash, it sounds like the speedo needle is phased incorrectly on the shaft. It's been awhile since I had my cluster apart but if memory serves (and my car is correct) the needle should point at the lower edge of the first white mark on the speedometer when at rest. Where does your needle point when the car is at rest? Maybe someone else who has had there cluster apart recently can comment on this.

and so how is adjustment made?

i guess i'll ahve to pull it apart and figure it out - i figure i stuck the larger gear in the wrong spot

The connections from the wiring harness to the cluster may be your issue if you are getting an improper readout on your speedo. I had the same issue with mine when I first put it back together (speedo would not rise above 10mph no matter how fast I was going....everything else worked great). I pulled it apart, cleaned the connections and reassembled....Waala, works great.

Brett, I'm going to start pulling my dashboard completely apart in a week or so, ultimately replacing the entire dash with one that's not cracked. While everything is apart, I'll do some fixing and preventive maintenance. Are any speedo gears available?

i don't think mine is a connection issue - though i did have a couple of those - first i had an antilock light, then a liht on the left - reset the connections, and al was fine - it goes up fine - just reads low - it's likely i have a gear in the wrong spot

Flash, where does your speedo needle sit while the car is not moving? It should be around the first mark, not below it.

Anchorman, I still have gears just send me a PM.

it is resting well below that mark - i will pull it apart again and reset the gear so that it is at the first tick - thanks - was in such a hurry to get everything done, i wasn't paying attention to that - also, was very used to cable driven ones that don't care

One benefit I had after replacing the gear was that the voltage gauge displayed much higher, between a half and a full volt higher than before. Must have been a result of exercising the connectors when removing the instrument panel. Certainly a bonus for fixing the odometer.

Flash,

As I recall, the needle is just a friction fit on the shaft. You don't need to remove any of the gears. Just pull the needle off and reindex it so that the needle points to the first mark.

lol - well, that would be easier - it does seem to be an equal amount off all the way up, as if to indicate a mere misplacement of the starting point, and not a progressive gear reduction issue

i'll let you know how it comes out - probably get to it today

Brett,

I received the gear from you, thank you very much.

I have not install it yet so I want to ask if anybody wrote a procedure for replacement the gear?

Thanks
