Non ABS worth 50 kgs racing
#1

Hello Guys!

I am now the owner of a 944 race car with 968 engine. Unfortunately it does not have ABS. It seems it can be retrofited (the car is an S 2) but I will have the benefit of 50 kgs less weight racing with a 5 kg/hp rule. The car is at minimum weight with me at 1050 kgs empty and 1185 or so with me as a driver. 247 hp allowed and that should be about what the car has.

Some has warned me that it is very easy to end up with bad flat spots down to the cord of the tire due to locking up. I also worry a bit that spinning will mean the same, today with the ABS I just put both feet in and wait tíll it is all over.. although I know it can be an advantage to be able to completely lock up in order to keep the trajectory away from hard things.

yes that can be good news or bad news, depending on your technique and setup - if the setup is balanced, and your technique smooth, then this could be great

if you are spotty or jerky, or if the car is set up wrong, you could be in lockup mode a lot

the first thing i would get done is balance the car and set the brake bias more to the rear than stock (if that has not already been done) - better to lock the rear than the front

i'm not a big fan of abs, and prefer to modulate lockup myself, but have not played with deleting it on this platform yet - i'd be interested to know how that turns out

The car has a brake balance adjustor. I thought locking up at the rear was worse with the tail coming round?

while i'm not advocating locking up the brakes, or anything like that, rear lock can be worse, IF you stay on the brakes - but, you'd have to be pretty lame to do that

but, a bit of initial rear lock can be a good thing, if you learn how to use it - it can pop you around a corner nicely, without upsetting weight balance - it's a tricky thing, but one i learned a long time ago from the old vintage guys with far less "civilized" cars

front lock is bad, no matter which way you look at it
