left horn button not working
#1

1) any ideas what would cause just the left horn button not to work ? ( the right one functions without any problems )

the wire leading to it looks perfectly fine, the fit is exactly the same as the right wire horn, all the contacts look very clean and shiny, no signs of any problems whatosever.

the bigger pain is that I cannot figure out a way to remove the button to see what is in there , there is nothing from inside the steering wheel which can be popped out or pried , and it does not seem that I can remove it from the outside either ..or at least I did not want to force it because these plastic parts are so damn fragile they can easily break

I'm thinking there has to be a way it comes off and is repairable or replaceable by itself, otherwise one would have to buy a new wheel if the horn button fails ?!

I repaired both buttons on mine last summer. Unfortunately the only way to get the buttons off is to pry them, they have tabs on 3 of the corners that hold them on. In the end you'll end up replacing the plastic that surrounds the button (as long as you don't break the tabs), the surrounds are $2.80 each and a week away coming from Germany. Once you have the button out there are copper pads that have an open "U" shape to them. when you press the button open "U" shape flattens and touches the contact below it. Chances are there is something wrong with the U shaped pad or the contact below it. Get in touch with Jeff at Sunset and have him order you the parts, in total I spent about $10 on two buttons, two surrounds and two new pads. The repair takes about 15-20 minutes.

I wish I would have taken pictures when I did mine.

Hope this helps.

geat, thanks !

so to pry them, you just use some tool like a bent nose pliers to grab the button caps on the sides and pull up, or maybe a couple of small flat screwdrivers and simultaneously push up against the sides until that whole button assembly pops out ?

Yep.. I typically use a small screwdriver and work it up.
It's become routine maintenance to pop the buttons and clean the contacts. It's a cheap-as* design - I'm considering replacing the mechanism with something more reliable. I guess I could buy new and hope it lasts awhile...

easier than I thought...the cap popped right off, and I think the copper piece inside must have somehow just gotten slightly dislodged out of the "seat" it's in, because as soon as it was placed back in its slot and the cap back on, the left horn button is once again ...alive !! I think the steering wheel was first used by VW and handed down to Porsche. We had a 90 VW cab that had the same wheel but with volks on it. Did the S2 use that wheel?

The 1989 944S2 that I had used the very same wheel, just in a different color to match the upholstery. Good luck, Bob Blackwell.

Glad to hear that you have the audible bumper working again. I worry about you actually running over someone without it...

I swear, if I had a nickel for evey time I honked to alert some bozo who was a fraction of a second away from running into my car from the adjacent lane because they never figgin' look around them ... I'd have enough $$ for another mod

That is particularly true in Arizona, the land jacked up monster trucks that look right over the roof of small sports cars.

my left horn button hasn't worked for some time. Was planning to have my mechanic work on it when in for annual service this week.  Decided to look it up on the forum, found this thread, 15 minutes later horn button works fine.  Thanks!
