Horn engages when the wheel turns left...
#1

Pretty much summing it up in the tittle...I have pulled the horn fuse as a quick fix but really would like to begin the diagnosis and ultimately fix this very annoying/rare? Gremlin.

With the horn fuse in...the horn will go off (with no firm or predictable interval [very short, short, short, long] beeps) when I turn the wheel to the left.

As a note(possibly related?)..the 3 major electrical gremlins I have discovered so far are below.

*Cruise control is intermittent (ignition switch?)

*Left & right Headlight have mind of their own (hoping simple relay clean will help)

*Horn engages with the wheel turned to the left. (Clockspring?)

Worth noting...the turn signal only engages(locks) when turning left and does not self cancel ...when signaling right I have to hold the turn signal manually to the right. (Could they all be related?)

Thank you for your help.

You would annoy everyone around if you drove on a NASCAR track !!

Others who are much more knowledgable than I am on these matters ( which covers about 99% of everyone on this forum ) will chime in no doubt , but I'd think the ignition switch , well known for a lot of electronic related gremlins , might be the culprit here , particularly considering the proximity of the contacts ...

@ds968 - Thank you for your thoughts. This ignition switch seems to be the root of a lot of gremlins!

you could also pop off the horn button and see if the contact switch inside has shifted.  Careful when prying off the button cover not to break the mounting tabs.

Hmmm...not a bad idea.  I will start to dive my new repair manual to help guide me through these items.

Must say...very weird gremlin :/

it's most likely the copper piece that contacts the horn ring.  they wear out.  easy to replace, but you have to remove the steering wheel to do it, which means a risk of the airbag light going off.

Hmmm...that would be good to check. I was reading about the steering wheel removal process...seems like if I wait 4 hours after I disconnect the battery I should be ok with the airbag light.

Curious what is the recourse if the light does appear? Many thanks.

As I reacll, the options are:

1. use a Durametric cable to reset the light.

2. have a Porsche dealer do it.

3. These forums have described a hand-built tool than can also do it - look around for that.

4. This can be done in conjunction with items 1-3 above, rant and rave a bit, curse the Germans and then try to relax as much as possible when you find out that a Porsche dealer will want at least $50 to do it (this has always been my favourite until I bought a Durametric).

When I got my 968 the horn was sort of wanky. I carefully pried off one of the buttons and straightened out the copper contacts underneath . Have not touched it aging in 7 years. A quick and easy fix.
