No air comming from the side vents
#1

Since winter is approaching I am starting to compile my winter project list. One of the issues I have with my car since I bought it, is that the side vents blow very little wind (Hot or Cold). Even on fan setting 4, I can barely feel anything comming out of those vents.

Has anybody had this problem in their car? I had a look at the filters under the bonnet and they are both white so I guess they are not clogged up, but I might just replace them anyway.

Any advice would be appreciated.

The head unit for the HVAC has little arms that activate the different paths for the air to flow. The common problem is the clips on the end of the linkage break and the arms still move, but the linkage doesn't. If you take the small cover off the under side of the head unit, you can see the "works". I would start by watching the unit work while you are move the settings on the head unit. This may help you spot a problem.

Hope this helps.

How do you access the "Head Unit"? When I took the cover off the dash to take out the instrument cluster, I could see the flap moving which directed air from the dash to the defrost............

I just want to make sure I follow you. The head unit has two sliders, one to direct the flow of air to your feet and another to direct the flow to the central vents. When I slide these arms across their range I can feel the airflow increasing either at my feet or in my face from the central vent, but never from the side vents. So, are you saying that one of these sliders (I assume the top one) is responsible for directing airflow to the side vents as well as the central vent?

I remember back when I had a 924 the side vents only blew cold air while the central and under dash vents would blow heated air. Is this different in the 968?

Be sure that the side vents are opened. They have their own little sliders that control them individually. Maybe the sliders have come loose of the internal vent control. The side vents and central vent should be on "max" when the dash sliders are both the far left and the central "up" vent that turns on the defrost is down. Also be sure that the car is not in "recirc" mode (the button beside the max defrost). That will turn off the side vents.

I think there is a diagram in the owners manual that shows an air flow chart. I could be wrong about the control of the side vents, but the unit does air routing and fresh air flow control. The chart may help answer this. My car is at home today or I would look.

Wiseman..on the driverside under the dash there is a panel next to the unit that is removable. The linkage is visable under this cover.

OK, I crawled under there tonight and pulled off the only cover I saw and there were 2 pieces of linkage there connected to a few arms. The ends of the linkage arms look like screws and they press into a white plastic piece.........Right? One of the white plastic pieces was broke and the linkage hanging there. I set the linkage arm into what was left of the white holder and tied some metal wire around it. Looks like it will hold. Problem is, with the ignition on, I really don't see what these two things do. The one I fixed moves with the recirculation button. Couldn't get the other one to move at all. Also, I have air coming thru the defrost vents regardless of where you set the sliders. What else should I be checking?

I will probably only be able t have a look next weekend, but I am starting to think my recirculate button/arm might be the cause of my problem. Will try to take photos when i get in there.

Did you end up fixing the recirculation flap?

I am unable to get hot air directed downwards to the feet. The bottom slider on the dash doesn't seem to engage the solenoid (clip isn't broken).

I have not had time to play with my car over the past couple of weeks. I have bought 2 new Herpa filters, because I realised that mine was filthy, so maybe after I replace the filters, the vents may work.

I'll let you know what I find out.

Tonight I managed to spend some time on this issue. I replaced the two polen filters and then proceeded to test the fan. While it blew a lot stronger than before (And it no longer smells) the left vent was still not blowing any air. The right vent however was blowing nicely.

I crawled under the steering wheel, and inspected the servos and arms, but they all functioned correctly. I then started dismantling the side vent to see if there was some or other blockage in there. What I found was that the plactic arm for the air flow control was broken. I have glued it with crazy glue and it seems to be working again

Didn't realize there were Hepa filters in the 968, mine must be black after 16 years. I assume they are under the black crispy cowel that goes across the back of the hood. On to the winter list this must go.

I am not sure if the '93 had them, they changed the fan housing either in 93 or 94. It is qute easy to see. if you have these filters. Have a look under the cover and you see a filter that looks a lot like an airbox filter, then you have a herpa/pollen filter. If it has a metal grid it doesn't have a herpa/pollen filter. I am not sure that it needs replacing then.

Maybe I'll retrofit something, I like clean air! (as if there is a lack of it on the BC coast )
