Side to side hood shimmy
#1

Hello,

I have noticed while driving that the hood shimmies side to side quite a bit while driving. I checked the hood hinges and the bolts are tight, but by design the hinges have long arms reaching underneath of the cowl which seems to me like it would knowingly cause this situation.

Are there rubber stops or something that are perhaps missing on my car that "lock" the hood in place when it is closed? If not, has anyone else dealt with this problem anf have a fix?

Thanks in advance!

Yes there should be a rubber hood bumper on either side located towards the rear of the engine bay. Unfortunately, they are NLA, so you'll have to pick some up used. My car is missing one of them, but I haven't noticed any hood sway.

Hmmm... I have a fiberglass hood, and, while I've only driven my car on a very limited basis since I've gotten it running (still waiting for the seal I need to hopefully fix my power steering), but I've never noticed any hood shimmey. I don't know offhand how many of the rubber stops bombfactory mentions are supposed to be on the car, but I think it's at least two, and possibly as many as four, but my car is definitely missing at least one. Have you checked the bolts that attach the hinges to the body, in addition to the ones that attach the hood to the hinges? When you have the hood raised, can you move it from side to side without much effort (you shuldn't be able to)?

Thanks guys - Bombfactory - where do these mount? is it on the fender and winds up in between the fender and the hood in the body line gap, or do they mount somewhere else? On my 944, there are 4 rubber pieces in the hood/fender gap, but they are up at the front and middle of the hood sides vs in the back towards the window (what I assume you mean when you say the rear of the engine bay). The part number I think it is supposed to be is 944.511.485.00 (can see at DCAuto.com under 968/body/hood section, but can't see where these mount from the diagram).

Cloud, I think you can move the hood side-to-side pretty easily when open, but it should be solid when shut. All of my hinge bolts are tight, but because of the long design of the hood hinge parts, it is easy for the play in it to show up. I would think rubber grommets or wedges would keep it from moving once shut.

THanks!!

You can see them along the bolted seam on each side of the engine bay in this picture.

Thanks Tamathumper - so it looks like this slides in sideways over the steel lip of the bolted seam, right? Does anyone know if these are the same part number for 944s? Both 944online and Pelicanparts has these "hood fillers", but as you know they generally list things for 944s only. Porsche does not have them in stock under the part number I got from DCAuto.com.

Better yet - anybody have a set of them they will sell me (Cheap)?!

Thanks again!

When bombfactory mentioned above they were NLA he meant they were "No Longer Available", an unfortunate circumstance on several odd bits of the 968, including some of the rubber seals along the cab top, at one time the rubber flex dampener in the automatic transmission was hard or impossible to find, and these little rubber baby buggy bumpers under the hood. In the case of NLA parts, used is your best bet, typically from LA Dismantlers or DC Auto.

I just checked my hood, and while I can get it to "twist" a bit when raised, it's very hard to move from side to side, so I'm not convinced these little rubber bumpers would have much impact on the OP's shimmy problem. Still seems to me that it's a problem with the hinges. Have you grabbed each one individually and pulled on it sideways?

If you'd like to swing by sometime to compare our hoods, just let me know.

I'm jealous that someone is close enough to "swing by". Being able to compare cars is priceless.

Is your battery to big? My hood was not flush with the fender and closer examination showed that the battery was too big and causing the problem. Tama you could swing by on our way to jay's to drink his vino!
