MAF Grill Broken
#1

Hi All,

I've not owned the 968 for too long and I thought i would give the MAF sensor a clean.

I don't know how or why but I found the grill / grate in front of the sensor broken (see attached pic).

Does anyone know if this would affect the car's performance in any way?

Thanks very much.

Cheers,

Harry.

Regardless of anyone else might say to the contrary, NO it won't make any difference ! But if I were you I'd carefully cut those broken blades off and also check for any other segments where the grill could be very brittle and maybe remove those as well to prevent the possibility of it breaking / crumbling further and pieces maybe ending in the ( very fragile ) sensor wires.

I'm more interested in how you clean the MAF. Looks pretty tender to the touch! I know a new one is around $1100 bucks!

You can buy a special 'MAF Cleaner' spray. Disconnect the MAF, spray it on the wires abundantly. Let dry completely before reconnecting and starting the car.

Also, do some digging, there is a near exact replacement for the MAF that was on a Volvo...don't have time to look for it right now, but that part was about $80 if I recall.

Yeah, I remember that as well ( the Volvo MAF ) , it'll come up if you run a search here.

Typical Porsche ripoff ; exact same part other cars have but at a price that's 10-15 X higher . That was reaffirmed just a couple of weeks ago when I bought the OEM Bosch voltage regulator which the dealer wants about 8 X of what you can buy it pretty much anywhere else .

I also thought our MAFs were NLA . Evidently I was mistaken , or , they brought it back .

So when the fit is seamless, do all MAFs wire sensors have the exact same reading and transmission of that info to any ECU ? In other words, will the 968's ECU' reception not detect al all there is a different MAF in there ? Or is this Volvo-Ferrari MAF the same OE tne 968 uses, and not just some other MAF that simply happens to fit perfectly ?

the tech data seems to say that they are basicly the same, i guess you would need to buy one and try it.

The MAF is not made by Porsche, but Bosch so it is an over the counter part that multiple company's use just like spark plugs or O2 sensors. Amazing what Porsche's mark-up is.

i would be concerned on any car using an aftermarket chip or forced induction. i would want to take readings to be absolutely sure it was the same in response. really bad things can happen if it isn't the same.

All you need to do is remove the unit, spray well with CRC MAF cleaner through the grill ( you have to, the grill is not removable ) , let it dy on its own ; it will take all of one minute, that spray dries completely just as fast as the CRC electrical cleaner does ( don't use the electrical one on your MAF , particularly since they have a specific MAF product ..) IMO , twice a year cleaning is probably sufficient but you can do that mote frequently if you live / drive in an area with a lot of dust .

Thanks all for the responses, I've cleaned up the grill and am hopeful no bits break off and cause damage.

Resurrecting this dead thread, I modeled up a replacement grill for the MAF that can be 3D printed. I recommend using something like ABS or PETG, just for temperature resistance. You can find the STL files here: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4598678

I too have a small segment broken on my grill. The rest seems stable so I'm not too worried ..... but that model is a really good idea!
