New wheels :-)
#1

Hi there!

So this is something i was thinking about quite a bit during the last years; should i stay with the stock wheels that work very well... Or should i go bigger. Some 2 weeks ago i decided and ordered. As rotating mass is a concern, due to making the car slower when increased, i wantet to go as light as possible. I ended up on oz alleggrita with michelin cup 2.

Some numbers for the weight of one wheel with tyre:

Stock 225/45/17 pirelli semis on 7.5x17 front 19.5kg

Stock 255/40/17 pirelli on 9x17 rear 22.8kg

New 235/40/18, michelin cup 2 on 8.5x18 front 17.7kg

New 265/35/18, michelin cup 2 on 10x18 rear 20.0kg

As for circumference... About 1 percent more with the new ones, which seems acceptabel for me.

So this is exactly like planed... Bigger, wider... But lighter :-)

There is not much i can tell ylu about handling as the streets are very cold right now in switzerland... Stay carefull.

As for clearance:

No problems at all. Perfect fit on the front axle, while there is quite some room left in the rear. I just ordered a set of 20mm spacers to get the wheels to where i want them to be.

Here also some pics...

Beside the advantage in weight, it is all a question of taste... I like them very much :-)

Have a great weekend

Those look great Andi!

this is a maybe someday for me, as I still love the C2 Turbos, but would like to have wider wheels in the back (currently only 7 front 8 rear)

Don't think you will like big fat 18's on a cab

i loved the 18s on my cab.  i know plenty of guys who have done it too.  there really is no difference between a cab and a hardtop when it comes to wheel fitment.

that being said, if i had it to do over again, i think i would stay with 17s, but go wider in the front than stock.  the problem is decent tire choice.

no chance i would put 20mm spacers on there though, unless you were supercharged.  the added weight will be a real bummer.  to go 20mm, you have to do the set with the second set of lugs, and that gets heavy

as for spacers, ANY spacer on these cars REQUIRES longer studs, unless you go with steel lug nuts.  porsche designed the studs with exactly the number of threads needed for aluminum lugs.  even with steel lug nuts though, you can only go 7mm on the spacers without changing the studs.

Hmmm...

I used to have spacers in until today... All around the car. Together they have a weight of 3.6kg.

I just didnt instal them back because the nuts that fit them to the axle were a bit to high... So i have to get flatter ones. I never felt any noticebal difference in power using spacers vs none. But i felt a great diffence in handling due to a wider spur, espacially at the rear axle...

i would be very surprised if the entire set only weighed 8lbs (don't forget the nuts).  every one i have weighed would make the sum nearly double that.

remember that every pound at each wheel has double the effect on the car in terms of acceleration and braking, and also adds to the mass the suspension has to control on every stroke.

further, while cornering may well improve, due to the wider stance, handling will likely suffer.  that's basic physics.  the farther out the wheel is, the more energy required to control it.  it's a trade-off.  it was worth it to me, so i had the wheels made with maximum offset.

no free lunch.  welcome to the club

Thanks for your words, Flash!

When i chanchd the wheels yesterday, i messured everything. The 4 spacers with nuts read 3640g. They were 15mm all around... And yes, they are very light... Not made of steel ?

And yes... Like most things, this is also a compromise...

So seen from the car, it takes more power to control the wheel... But seen from the wheel... Forces from the ground... Attack from further out and thereby have a bigger impact on turning or whatever the car.

I think it is like you said... A compromise...

If you like driving a car or no is probably not only phisiks... For my ?... It is very much about how i feel, when i drive, if there is trust in what the car makes and the form and amount of feedback... I like the feeling of having the wheels as far as possible out... This feeling makes me fast (i like driving, but i would not say i am very good at it ?)

Ohh yeees... This is highly ad personam... And maybe far away from the theoretical optimun ??

As for acceleration and weight...

Yeees, this is the reason for taking these wheels... They are the lightst ones i could find in this dimension (for normal street use) and still look great.

But the further out the weight, the bader it is... The spacers are pretty much in the center and influence muuuch less then if the weight was added by driving a heavier wheel...

This is maybe the reason i do not feel a difference...

Hmm...

I think...

I go for a short drive now ?

Ohh... Yes... Befor i start the engine...

Yesterday i took out some 9.6kg by changing the wheels... And some 3.6kg by taking the spacers out... So 13.2kg rotating mass in total ???

Wheels look great!!

What is the offset on those wheels?

I must admit that I have never been a fan of aftermarket rims that looked like aftermarket rims. I have always picked rims that would look like they belonged on the car. My 928 (see picture) had 993 Cup rims on even though it was born with the phone dial rims, and they definitely look like they belong to this car. I would never replace the 993 Cup on the 968 but it is time to restore them. Just a personal thing and beauty is always in the eye of the beholder.

After a lot of searching I had my rims power coated they came out great, but I need new center caps now as they are chipped and damaged and paint is worn.

Hi there :-)

Finally I had the things done I wrote about before:

- Got longer bolts installed - Got spacers installed

- Got a new Suspension installed

- Got New Brakes installed

As written before, I wantet the new wheels to be at the right place, a bit further out. As the bolt-on bolted spacers didnt work on These wheels there had longer bolts to be installed, so non-boltet spacers could be used. So like this I got now 10mm spacers on the front and 20mm spacers on the rear axle. Like this, the Car has the appearance and behaviour I like.

At the same time the brakes needed a Revision; new discs and pads (Pagid yellow) all around.

Also my old Clubsport Suspension - maybe some 12 to 15 years old - seemed to be a bit worn out. So as a replacement there is now a KW V3 Clubsport with custom springs and valving installed. The car has not been lowered further, as I mainly drive it on the road. The ride is great as far as I can tell after only some short and not very inspired km / mls. When just cruising, you get the impression of driving a relativly comfortable car. The Suspension has enoug travel to never block, hit, the car sits quiet and not bumpy at all. As soon as you curve it, you feel how stable the thing is. Minimal bodyroll, lots of traktion... just feels good :-)

Here you find some pics...

Kunz,

Those are some of the nicest looking rims I have seen outside of OE/factory spec.  They are lined up just right.  Your car

has a great overall stance and I am sure handles beautifully.  Nice!

Great looking car with many awesome mods. OZ wheels look very similar to Enkeis we like.

Please note correct ride height of this car. Front fender arches are 10mm higher than rear.

I'd like to see better picture of strut bar and firewall brace.

Thanks for the Kind Feedback, friends!

@ Ryan:

I had a clutch-Problem some years ago... the clutch would not separate when being pressed due to an unproper alingement of the crank und the transaxle... producing a lot of heat, letting the pads grow when hot. Until I could get this fixed I just stud like bull on the clutch pedal... which then made the Firewall let go... hmpf... the blue Little strud is a homemade pice... taking some of the load from the wall

@ Pete:

I will try to mesure and take pics.

The strud bar is - like some other stuff - a bit homemade. As I have a 16-point-cage in there, the Cockpit is pretty rigid. I felt like the front needed a bit more strength. So I made this strud. I also have a lower chassis brace...

The car would not be what it is without the help, advice and some parts of you, Pete!

Thanks a lot!
