Hi All,


I fitted a new stereo to my car yesterday, replacing an Alpine head unit that has no place in a Porsche (at least IMO).


The unit has DAB and Bluetooth telephone.


It looks and sounds great.

I bought the stereo from http://www.bergvillfx.com and they also sell little Porsche stickers to apply to the head unit.

Very nice looking unit. I was just discussing modern car stereo/radios with a friend yesterday. My contention is that, at least in this area, technology has made the product less fit for its purpose. Old-fashioned car stereo/radios, operated by two knobs and a group of push buttons, lend themselves to the task of being adjusted WHILE DRIVING far more effectively than do the modern versions with their touchscreens and multiple menus that are difficult to maneuver through and adjust WHILE DRIVING. I might sound like an old fart luddite, but that's my opinion and I'm sticking to it!

Yup , what Bill said, + 1. I do have aftermarket units in both of my 968s because the sound is a million times better than what Porsche put in there , but I deliberately searched for something which was as simple to use as possible, while driving ..all the new touch screen crap is thoughtless , and dangerous !

Simple luddites. How quaint. I've purchased three 968's and the stereo's didnt work in any of them. Frankly listening to the sound of the car is music to my ears. Mind you I love listening to music and have it in my other vehicles!

sorry - not for me - gotta have touchscreen nav in every car.  deal breaker for me.  no kludgey windshield units either.  gotta be built in.

 

also absolutely positively must have an equalizer built in.  i actually enjoy listening to music in the car, and no simple "bass/treble" unit can do the job of correcting for the anomalies and deficiencies of the speaker placement in the 968.  they always sound thin and/or boomy, and if you have a convertible, you get the added pleasure of them sounding honky too.

 

the first thing i did with the A3 we just got was to install the nav unit and add a backup camera.  we just bought another car this weekend, and i am doing the same thing, as well as adding the park assist sensors.  these are essential items nowadays, and should be required in all cars.  i am so sick and tired of people banging into us, because they weren't paying attention, trying to figure out where they are going, or just not looking as they park their car.

 

fortunately most car manufacturers have figured this out, and are installing these systems as standard equipment.

 

i put all of it in my blue car, and it made driving the car a much more pleasurable experience.  the only thing i never got around to was to install steering wheel controls for the system.

 

different strokes i guess, but these are the things that ultimately made me sell the blue car, and go for something more updated.  i'm just too old and cranky to put up with less, and my days of driving old cars are over (though i am toying with the idea of a TR6, but i would still install all of the modern technology).

 

all i can say is "don't drive a new sports car with all the goodies."  you'll never climb back into the 968 again, and you'll get really depressed.

Completely agree on the quality of music statement ; any head unit lacking a comprehensive graphic equalizer generates a sound that is so poor, I'd rather keep it turned off. I have an eleven speaker Bose surround sound system in my Maserati , with a head unit which has only treble and bass adjustments and the sound produced does not even hold a candle to the $ 300 Alpine unit Bob ( flash ) installed in my 968 . Sure, the 968 has been dynamat sound-proofed , as have the speaker cubbies, but even without that the sound from that "cheap" unit sounds like a concert hall compared to the Maserati's ridiculously expensive stereo which sounds like Roseanne Barr singing the national anthem, in the shower . Total waste of 11 speakers !


Completely agree that flash is a cranky old man, who gets lazier with each passing day, when it comes to cars, that is .. Sheesh, get a chauffeur already, and be done with it , lol !

lol - frankly, if i could figure out how to have a chauffeur at my disposal, i would never drive again.  just not quite there yet.  working on it though.  you can't even get a car with all the goodies over here, the roads suck, drivers are nuts, and costs to own a car are insane.  driving has become a chore.  it was almost that way in socal.  i would gladly give it up.

 

i feel qualified to say, having had the most developed and refined 968 on the planet, that there are a number of modern cars that run rings around the 968, and are far more pleasurable to drive.  but i don't like tramlining, rattles, squeaks, leaks, lack of steering wheel controls of the system, lack of heads up display, lack of parking sensors, lack of heated seats, lack of memory seats and mirrors, lack of full nav, lack of a proper phone interface that makes calls sound like you are in the next room, and being passed while at full throttle by your basic BMW sedan.  in the end, no matter how much of the $150k i had spent on the 968, trying to bring it up to standard in comparison to new cars, it just did not measure up.  was it a great car?  sure.  was it as good as the 991 targa GTS?  not a chance.

 

but then some guys love driving an old speedster, so go figure.  i've had my old sports car days, and left them behind, for very good reasons.  will i go back?  perhaps.  or maybe i'll just take up a stool at the pub, and be done with it.

 

back on topic, any stereo would have to produce quality sound.  no bass/treble deck can do that in this car.  it really doesn't matter what it looks like.  function over form is the only logic to be applied.  otherwise, put in what you like the looks of, and don't bother connecting it.

I think comparing old cars to new cars and individual preferences toward one or the other probably belongs in the " nothing beats an old crappy car " thread ( or something along those lines ..don't remember the thread title exactly, just the general discussion ). This is the audiophile thread ;-)

I bet the stereo sounds like crap, and it probably performs about as well as a modern Toyota Versa, with none of the safety/comfort features.
