New Porsche Crests
#1

Recently I bought a Genuine Porsche Hood crest (pre 95) from a large on-line company. I bought a new one because a mount on the old one had broken. When I took my car in to my Porsche specialist he noted that the red in the crest was not dark enough and suggested it was a poor imitation. I certainly paid for a genuine crest and the numbers on the back are the correct cat #. I contacted the company and they agreed to send me a new one. The replacement looks the same as the first new one with the same problems. I have attached shots of the new crest side by side with my old crest. The red is lighter (pinkish), the gold colour is not as deep and the crest is slightly domed, unlike my old (original?) which is flat. The replacement came in a genuine Porsche box although I note it is made in China (not surprised if Porsche get stuff like this made there).

Has anyone bought a new crest recently. Was it up to scratch? Are Porsche standards slipping?

Cheers
Ian

Could be a Chinese copy. They are known to copy everything down to the box and packaging. They have been doing that with Bosch parts, the box looks just like the real one except for some color hue differences and where it was made. You have to watch out for the counterfeit stuff from China these days.

I just went down to my local Porsche specialist and while there checked out a few crests . I saw some crests bought directly from Porsche dealerships that have the same "defects" as my new crest. So I conclude that they just don't make 'em like they used to. I would have thought the company would have maintained the quality of its primary icon.

This may be the perfect time to shop for a crest-owner's insurance policy.

I still have a "Silver" hood crest from the dealer in its original box, which I had heard at one time that Porsche discontinued and the demand for them skyrocketed commanding a small fortune, but then they decided to bring it back in production and while still rare to find it in stock at most dealers in
the U.S. at least, I understand you can order from Germany. Or maybe by now it's widely available .

Anyway, when I first saw Ian's photo here, I thought that's what it was, but then reading the post and on a closer look I realized it's not the same as my silver one, just a lot of light shining on the less yellow gold, making it appear almost silver. Looks like the same one I have on my car, and I did change the original one several years ago, when the pin mount also broke.

Here's a shot ( sorry, also messed up lighting so the center of the silver crest is obscured ) of my hood crest and the silver one in the box.

On my car's color I'm not all that crazy about it, particularly since I also have the "yellow" crests on the wheel caps, and the mismatch would annoy me.. but I've seen it on black and even midnight blue and they look amazing, I suspect on silver or red it would be just as great..very unique and attracts intetest.

No idea where to source one, I'd call the local dealer first, and if they don't have it I'm sure the U.S. HQ ( in Atlanta ? )will know where to get it , if available.

Not selling mine, that's a keeper. But I'll try to take a better photo of it this weekend so the details, the horse, colors are truer and are clearer.

My 968 came with the badge that Flash has, ie. gold.
I bought another badge that was specifically silver, not gold. I was given a choice.
I guess that this means that there are three variations!

I bought a new one from eBay about a year ago, that was supposed to be genuine Porsche ("and getting hard to find" according to the listing). When I got it, the cloisonne was in subpar condition and it seemed to have too much curvature. The gasket would not fit....seller sent a second gasket but had the same results...I sent it all back for a refund. Don't remember seeing anything that said where it was made, but for what they sell for, I cannot imagine Porsche having them made anywhere except China, Malaysia, etc. Accordingly, the result is poor reproduction, poor workmanship, substandard appearance. I found it to be consistent with everything I purchased the last ten years that was made in China...disappointing quality. And many car manufacturers are having parts made there now, along with entire cars.....sickening.

Here's another shot of the silver crest -still not great, but better I think.. well, all the red stripes are the same shade in real life, not as they appear in the photo - two pink and two red Not too much curvature to this one, just the right amount and it fits perfectly in the gasket, so pretty decent stuff. The numbers on the back are 993 559 211 00 but no indication where it's made, either on the crest or the box anywhere..
