New drivers seat
#1

I am getting the drivers seat recovered with Porsche leather this Friday. Thinking about having something embroidered on the head rest. "Cosimo" would not be good if I ever sell the car but is intriguing, I've also thought about "968" or the Porsche logo. Any thoughts?

The porsche crest would look nice. But size is critical. Too small and its a waste of money too large and its German rice.

At the car show last year there was a company advertising there work. It wasn't embroidered but it had that kind of look to it. It was kind of like a stamp I guess. After seeing his work I realized how sharp a crest would look on our seats.

I like the crested seats from the factory. I believe the crest is embossed from the factory.

An embroidered crest would not look good in my opinion. In addition, the thread of the embroidery will get dirty quickly / fade quickly due to UV exposure.

My vote would be to forego any embellishments.

But it is your car so do what you like (and post pictures once done so the rest of us can drool!).

Sorry, but I'm in the camp of "do nothing" as well...if you did anything, I'd go with a crest, but then you should do passenger seat to match.

The leather embossing/stamp shouldn't be too hard to add later, although you may have to remove the upholstry to have it done, not sure. I certainly wouldn't do anything that makes it look like it didn't come that way, ie, an obvious aftermarket thing.

Here you go Cosimo. Easy, cheap, and removable if you don't like it. And you get to show your team spirit at the same time.

While I am a Nationals fan, they are not doing good enough to be in my 968. Actually I'm more of a Red Sox fan but not for a spot in my car. The consensus seems to be to let plain. It wouldn't look right having something on side only but if I put "cosimo" there it might be a deterent to not sell the car. I'm around Porsches at IMA and there are really great cars that come in and are very tempting.

One my 968's came with factory embossed Porsche logos on both seats. They are nice....

But I personally don't feel the need to go over board on Porsche logos on cars. I've seen cars with more than a dozen Porsche logos/lettering, and it's too much...

I also vote for leaving it plain. I think eventually you will regret adding something there.

good question...eventually need to do this myself and would love to have a good upholsterer guy or gal that I trust.

It's Lims Custom Upholstry in Tysons Corner. I have used them before to replace the bolster on the drivers side. They also do convertible tops. I have seen their convertible top work that they did for some IMA customers. They are adding a second location in the Chantilly area, just down the street from IMA. The reason for the new seat covering is that the bolster is again split and there are too many cracks in the leather. The cost is $1000 for the factory leather.

at that cost, it would be cheaper to ship them out here and have them done - my guy will do both seats in porsche leather for about $1300 for the pair

Now that's something to think about...I've seen 2 seat OEM leather kits for about that price, but then you'd have to do it yourself or have a shop install them anyway, so that's a decent deal. I'd guess you could ship a pair of seats for 150 or so. Hmmmmm,

sounds about right - i'll be talking to him in the next few days - i'll see what he says about the best shipping and a total out the door number, but the last time i talked to him a few months ago, it seemed like a no brainer

No getting around cost when it comes to seats.

I recently passed up a beat up set of sport seats. They were blk and I need linen. Also, the drivers side bolsters looked really bad and the leather was pretty dirty. The price however was only $600 for the set. Factor in new leather at 1200 the shipping at $200 and your looking at $2000. The Cobra Misanos I really want are 1,500 ea the sportlines are about the same. Your going to pay for a fresh cockpit but I think its worth it.

yeah - i think it will end up about 1500-1600 for the pair including shipping with this guy - not a huge savings, but a savings nonetheless

i'll look into it though

The problem with shipping to the "left coast" is the time without the use of the car. Not only that you have to package the seats for shipment and take them out and reinstall the seats. Now I take it in the AM and it's done at the end of the day. He offered to do the passenger seat for another $600. The passenger seat is in good shape but I'm sure it will need to be cleaned to try and match the new leather. I've always been a huge fan of Flash's Recaros but can't spring for the bucks at this time.

agreed - that is an issue - in and out in a day - that's good - this guy does it all from scratch, so it takes longer - the fit and quality is outstanding, but it takes a few days
